Where are you from?
I have lived in Houston, Texas, for the last forty-plus years. Before settling in the Lonestar State, I lived in a dozen small cities and towns across the Midwest: Nebraska, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, Minnesota, and Michigan. Moving so often in my youth, I don’t have a hometown, although my ancestors had a homestead in North-Eastern Nebraska for three generations. To this day, I consider the Siouxland area of Nebraska the place closest to my heart.
Tell us your latest news?
The third book in the Rory Naysmith Mysteries, Gone Crazy, has been published. I am extremely proud to have found a publishing home with The Wild Rose Press and thankful to the readers who have followed the middle-aged, curmudgeonly detective to Winterset, Nebraska, and cheered him on.
When and why did you begin writing?
I began writing to
connect with my family. In the late 90s, I joined a story-sharing group that
included my sister, mother, niece, and a couple of cousins, and we exchanged
stories once a month. Our stories were lacking, but the exercise was
satisfying, the stories imaginative, and I discovered a creative joy by
participating in our writing endeavor. When the group disbanded, I continued to
write and found publication opportunities for many short stories. That success
led to novel-length manuscripts.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Honestly, it took a
while. I felt it was pretentious to say I was a writer. Now I know my lack of
confidence made me afraid to claim the moniker—impostor syndrome if you will.
Then, at a conference, a professional editor critiqued my work. I started the
interview by saying, “Well, I’m an amateur.” He quickly and sternly scolded me.
It took his professional recognition to banish my insecurities. That was ten
years ago. My advice to anyone writing today, no matter where you are on your
journey, is to claim your due. If you put in the time and effort, you are a
writer. Period.
What inspired you to write your first book?
The inspiration for Gone Astray, the first Rory Naysmith mystery, came after the disappearance of a friend’s mother. A spry septuagenarian, she left home one morning for her job at the local bank. Poof! She vanished. Her disappearance changed the family members’ lives forever. The incident was too haunting not to inspire a story. However, it required a longer format than my usual short story, and I wrote a novel. Then I wrote another, and another, and another. I guess there is no stopping me now; I greatly enjoy the process.
Do you have a specific writing style?
My mystery novels
are character-driven and written in an easy-to-read colloquial style. They
contain no violence (except murder, of course), swearing, nudity, or sex. You
can count on the criminal being unmasked and brought to justice. And since I
enjoy a story that ends in a promise of happiness, so can my readers.
How did you come up with the title?
I love to read
mystery series. This book, Gone Crazy, is the third in my mystery
series, and although each book is a stand-alone story, all the books share the main
characters and take place in the small town of Winterset, Nebraska. One thing
that frustrates me when I discover a new series is trying to determine the
order in which the books were written. To solve this for my readers, I titled
each volume alphabetically: Gone Astray, Gone Before, and the latest, Gone
Crazy. (This is not an original idea, i.e. Kinsey Millhone series by Sue Grafton) I’m ready to title book 4: Gone Deep, Gone Down, and Gone Divergent are
in the running. And I am always interested in opinions and suggestions.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Good Trumps Evil or
Justice Prevails is the common theme of my books because the plots require
Detective Rory Naysmith to solve a crime. Gone Crazy, includes a Native
American element. My hope is the dignity and values of the Ho-Chunk Nation are
evident in my portrayal of that community and in those characters.
What would you like my readers to know?
Gone Crazy will not be the last Rory Naysmith mystery, but I am working on the first book in a new series, Heads Up, Ruby Bleu, a historical cozy mystery set in 1951. Nineteen-year-old Ruby leaves the farm for a rented room in town and a job as a church secretary. She balances her way into a case of creative accounting that adds up to murder. Look for A Ruby Bleu Mystery in early 2025.
