BOOK SYNOPSIS

Her best friend has his own comic shop, respects her fandom, and offers to add a with benefits clause to their relationship, to distract her from the stresses of work. What more could a geek-girl ask for?
Tori thought being the head designer and co-owner of a cosplay-themed lingerie company meant a chance to create. Instead of coming up with new ideas of her own, she spends all her time drawing others’ concepts, and managing her half the corporation.
The pressure pushes her past the edge of frustration. Her best friend and Sunday afternoon movie buddy, Archer, offers her an outlet—sex, minus the emotional attachment. When getting off takes a graphically novel turn, Tori realizes dirty talk is a massive turn-on.
The rush of speaking her mind bleeds into the workplace, and the backlash leaves Tori staggering. On top of that, she hasn't protected her heart from Archer as well as she intended. Now the novelty of saying what she thinks threatens to screw Tori out of her job and her closest friend.

AUTHOR BIO

Allyson Lindt is a full-time geek and a fuller-time contemporary romance author. She prefers that her geeky heroes come with the alpha expansion pack and adores a heroine who can hold her own in a boardroom. She loves a sexy happily-ever-after and helping deserving cubicle dwellers find their futures together.

Interview:

Where are you from?
The recesses of cubicle-landia, where dreams are broken, and some wicked office romance fantasies are forged. Also, Utah. We’ve got snow, commuter trains, and some gorgeous views from the hills.
Tell us your latest news?
I’ve got something old and something new in the works. New is a contemporary romance series, Your Ad Here, that kicks off with the heroine crushing on her best friend’s older brother.
Old but re-polished, in a previous (writer) life, I had another pen name, and she released a handful of Urban Fantasy novels. I’m re-releasing my book Uriel’s Fall, and finally finishing the series. The eternal struggle between heaven and hell has gone corporate.
When and why did you begin writing?
I’ve been writing since I was tiny. At five or six, I wrote my first “book” about a girl who wanted a horse, so she saved her money to buy one. I kept doing the writing thing, because there have always been stories I wanted to read that aren’t out there. So I make them.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Forever? :D I got serious about it—polishing my work, figuring out the whole publishing thing, about eight years ago, and I’ve never looked back.

What inspired you to write your first book?
My first real, full length novel was a very early iteration of Uriel’s Fall. I found a drawing of a demon-looking elf girl, and I happened to be listening to Evanescence’s Fallen album at the time. An demon who was struggling to find her place in this world and back home popped into my head, and Ronnie was born.

Do you have a specific writing style?
Sarcastic, frantic, and cutting things as close to the deadline as possible. I like traces of humor, those little quirky moments that make a reader laugh out loud, and characters with intelligence and sass. They also tend to make a lot of geeky pop-culture references, because geeky pop-culture rules me :D
How did you come up with the title?
Graphically Novel… I struggled with this one for a long time. The book has had a lot of titles since I started writing it. In the end, it came down to, the hero, Archer, has his own comic book shop, and the heroine, Tori, is learning that dirty talk is a turn-on. From there, the pun presented itself.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
All my novels have a similar underlying theme—you’re happier being yourself, and finding your place in the world, than trying to mold to other people’s expectations. Oh, and in this one, that smexy-times in the forest can be super-hot. ;)

How much of the book is realistic?
I think the majority of this book is realistic. Especially since a lot of Tori’s experiences with work are taken from a job I had once upon a time.

What books have most influenced your life most?
It’s a long list, but I’ll try and narrow it down a little bit.
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett is a huge influence for me, as is American Gods by Neil Gaiman. And the Forbidden Game and Vampire Diaries books by LJ Smith rocked my world when they first came out, and are still at the top of my list as influences.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
I don’t know if she’ll remember me, but she probably will since she’s amazing like that. When I was first getting serious about writing romance, I was fortunate enough to be on a writing bootcamp team with Cathryn Fox. She critiqued my first few books, and gave me such brilliant help and feedback. When I think of mentors, she always immediately snaps to mind.
What would you like my readers to know?
Hmm… I should think up a tag line for things like this. Something like Geeks rule, Homer Simpson drools. Or go with the standard “read my books.” But I guess the biggest thing they should know, is I love meeting new people, so if they ever want to say hi on Facebook or Twitter, I’d be pleased to make their acquaintance.

They should also know I’m super grateful to visit here today. Thank you for hosting me!

EXCERPT

“You’re pretty good at handling the media,” Alex mused once we’d taken our seats inside the cinema. “You sure know how to put them in their place. I think that was the most effortless set of interviews I’ve ever had.”
“I have a love, hate relationship with them. I don’t mind being abrupt when they overstep their mark.”
“That’s a little like us.” I had to giggle at that. “You look really beautiful tonight, Nat.”
“Maybe you should keep your eyes on the stage instead of on me.” I smirked, brushing of his comment while we watched the director and main leads take the stage. I tried to collect my thoughts, but Alex Harbour had just called me beautiful.
So many people acknowledged Alex as they wandered past us. Some stopped to congratulate him on the song for the soundtrack. I, myself, was disappointed with the song. It had a more pop feel than rock. To me, it was like he’d sold out on this track. It wasn’t the real him.
My mouth fell open when Adam Rider came over and had a quick chat with us. He was ‘the’ Hollywood actor at the moment, and gazing up at him, I could see why. The man was almost as sexy as Alex, with his dark, almost black hair, deep chocolate eyes and sexy irish accent. He wore a tux just as well, too.
“When are you going to take that jump into the film industry, Alex?” he asked, darting his eyes toward me.
“That’s never going to happen, Adam. Music is my love. We’ve had this conversation before.”
“And who is this? I don’t think we’ve been introduced.” Adam held my gaze, the same way Alex did the first time I met him. Celebrities of their caliber always had that effect on me, knocking me breathless with their beauty. It was a surreal moment to realize they were real people, not just a perfect face in a magazine or on TV.
“I…I…I’m Natasha White,” I stuttered, taking his hand when he offered it to me.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Natasha,” he cooed, kissing the back of my hand. Hollywood actors…were they all this smooth? “I’m not used to seeing Alex with such a sophisticated woman.” Now I was blushing.
“Natasha is my new personal assistant.” Alex’s tone was sharp as he shot daggers at Adam. “You better take your seat, Adam. It looks like they’re going to start.”
“I need to find my date anyway. Good talking with you, Alex. Natasha.” Gracefully, he disappeared into the crowd in search of his seat.
“Wow,” I gasped, holding my chest. “I just met Adam Rider.”
“Are you a fan of his?” Alex didn’t seem that interested in my answer. He was busy playing with the arm of his chair.
“Who isn’t a fan of his? I heard he turned down the lead role in this film we’re seeing tonight.”
“I wouldn’t know, but I’m not sure Westerns are his thing anyway.”
“Do you see him a lot? Are you good friends with him?”
“Straight Lace, do you have a crush on Mr. Hollywood? I do know him pretty well. We jam together from time to time.” He couldn’t hide his smirk. “Most actors are womanizers, though, and Adam is no different. I wouldn’t get mixed up with him.”
“I’ve heard that about rock stars, too,” I quipped. “And you definitely live up to that.”
“Maybe you need to find a more reliable source. You really don’t know me well enough to make that judgement yet.”

Excerpt:

As I awaken in the dark warmth of this terrifying place, laid out on the strangely uneven ground, I open my eyes to see the true horrors this place was built upon. The hills and valleys are not made of dirt at all but rather the bodies and remains of various humans and unidentifiable creatures. The uncomfortable warmth quickly turns to searing heat; with each second that passes my skin slowly burns away from my body, literally turning to ash and dispersing into the fiery air. The pain is excruciating. I want to scream in pain, but I quickly realize that all I can hear are the tortured screams and moans that seem to be coming from everywhere and nowhere at the same time. I try to move and the skin on my legs tears away in large grotesque chunks. What am I doing here? I think to myself, and I remember that I am here for a very specific reason. Where is she? She is supposed to be near where I landed. If I don’t reach her soon, we will be doomed to remain in eternal fire and pain forever.

Interview
Where are you from? Oahu, Hawaii
Tell us your latest news? The Beyond Heights and Depths Trilogy is complete. The final book came out earlier this year. I feel now is a good time to do a book tour for the first book and reach a wider audience. Beyond Heights and Depths is the first book of the Beyond Heights and Depths Trilogy. The book follows the journey of Emmett and Ash. Emmett moves to a better neighborhood with the hope of leaving his troubled past behind and doing everything he can to reconnect with his lost love, Ash. An accident brings them together, but before they can enjoy their new relationship they find themselves at the center of a battle between good and evil that has existed since the beginning of humanity. I’m really happy with the response the series has been receiving. I’m also working on a completely different project that should be released soon.
When and why did you begin writing? I’ve been writing for a long time, but I never had any intentions of publishing anything. I always loved reading. My love of reading carried over into writing. At first, I only wrote poetry and such, mostly because people thought it was cool when I was younger. I started writing Beyond Heights and Depths because the story kept playing in my head. I felt like I had to start writing the story to get it out of my head. It was consuming me. When I finished, I was happy with the result, and so I thought I would try publishing to see if anyone else liked my writing.
When did you first consider yourself a writer? Honestly, I don’t know. I really didn’t feel like a writer until I was working on book two. A lot of people call me a writer, but I’m not sure I’ll ever consider myself a writer. I just enjoy writing. It’s nice that other people like my works too.
What inspired you to write your first book? Like I was saying before, I started writing Beyond Heights and Depths because the story kept playing in my head. I felt like I had to start writing the story to get it out of my head. It was consuming me. What triggered it was running into someone I had not seen in a long time. I guess you could say she was the inspiration for Ash. The story kept playing on from that point. New ideas would develop and the story would flow over time, but it’s funny to think everything started from me casually running into someone.
Do you have a specific writing style? No. I like to think I am continually learning and growing. I think my style is still evolving.
How did you come up with the title? I went through a long list of ideas for titles. I tossed around ideas for a while. Eventually, I chose this one because it is based on a piece of scripture that I heard and liked. Ideas on heaven, hell, demons, and darkness are themes in the book, so I thought the title worked well in that context.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? I hope so.
How much of the book is realistic? I add a lot of realistic touches to make the story feel real. I describe real places, people, and things that people can easily recognize.   There are very real aspects to the book, though it is a work of fiction.
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life? Yes, Beyond Heights and Depths is my first novel. As such, I had to start with what I knew: places, people, things. Some of the characters and events are loosely based on people and events from my own life, sure, but eventually the characters took on a life of their own.
What books have most influenced your life most? I have loved reading for as long as I can remember, so it’s hard to choose. As a kid, I would say, Where the Sidewalk Ends. As an older teenager, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I used to love to read Stephen King books. “It” stands out as one of my favorites. I also loved Harry Potter, Twilight, and the Hunger Games series, so you could say my taste is eclectic.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? Honestly, I can’t choose.
What book are you reading now? Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest? I really enjoy all of John Green’s books.

What are your current projects? My latest project is another young adult novel, but it is much darker than Beyond Heights and Depths. It is inspired by a true story. At it’s core, the book is about a boy and girl who meet again in a psychiatric facility and their journey from that point. They are both deeply troubled, so it is a rough journey for them both.

CLANG!
He woke with a start.
A flaccid sliver of grey light had infiltrated the dank blackness. The comforting numbness in his right shoulder convinced him that he had survived the night. He listened carefully and played his second favorite game—how long until they got to his cell and tossed in what he had come to call “breakfast.”
A key twisted in the lock. The door screeched open, the light blinded his nocturnal eyes and a metal tray scraped across the filthy concrete floor.
His hand searched toward the sound. Treasure found, his fingers encircled the spoon handle.
Slowly, painfully he crawled to the corner and scratched a hatch mark on the wall as he recited his “sanity” mantra.
“I am Sergeant Steven Hays. Today is day 2,189 of my captivity. I am engaged to Gwenn Hutchinson and I will return to her. God. Country. Corps.”
Steven slid the bowl over and forced himself to consume the foul slop it contained. He was emaciated and his mouth burned from canker sores. One thought kept him alive—his last, sweet, searing memory of her. Gwenn was his guardian angel and he intended to live long enough to tell her.

excerpt
I cannot see. I have been straining my eyes, trying to dissect the darkness in the hopes of discovering a slither of light. I have not found any. I cannot move, not even shift my posterior in this hard rock chair. I am covered in rope from my neck down to my feet. I am not simply tied down, I am hog-tied! My neck and feet seem to be connected by a single rope. Every time I move the line tightens and digs into my skin, burning like the dickens. My neck feels as if it is going to snap. My knees feel as if they are about to pop out of their sockets. Screaming for help only brings about more pain, my tongue lies against the driest of cloths.
I guess I should be thankful for what I do get, two meals and two glasses of water a day. Let me stop lying to myself, I am not thankful. I am in this chair all day long. I am forced to relieve myself right where I sit, downright embarrassing. They have not told me what this is about. They don’t say anything. They just shove spoonful after spoonful of food in my mouth. I have no idea of the time or the day, the last day I remember was October 10th.
The door opens. With it comes the coolest of breezes, the temperature must be in the 40s. Winter will be here soon. I am cold because they have taken all of my clothes. They have stripped me bare including my shoes and socks. I do not smell any food, what I do smell is cologne, very loud and pungent cologne. Do not know anyone who wears that fragrance. Not sure of who they are, they are not one of the regulars. It is someone new. New can be a good thing, maybe I can get some answers. Who am I kidding, new is not good at all. New means a change has arrived or is on the way real soon.
“What do you want with me?”
“Personally I don’t want anything from you. The people who hired me, they want something.”
“They want what? Why am I here?”
“You are here because they want to remind you of all the dirty deeds you have done.”
“This does not sound good at all.”
“No it does not.”

about the author
clip_image008I began my writing career five years ago by accident. My young son was sick and I could no longer work full-time as a nurse. He needed me. It was during this time that God sat me down and showed me the path that was destiny. I was destined to be a writer. In five years I wrote five novels.
Two have already been published, Getting Roosevelt–a homeowner’s nightmare and Silence Is Broken.
My son is much better now, Praise God, and I have a new career. When I am not spending time with him I like to crochet and sketch, and trying new recipes.
My stories focus on life in Philadelphia. They are fiction based loosely on fact. Philadelphia is a major city with a suburban feel. However, the lifestyle of its citizens can rival New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. Intrigue and suspense coupled with mystery are the genres I write.
In addition to writing fiction, I write for the online magazine Examiner.com. My focal point is Autism/ Special Needs Children, Frugal Living, and the Philadelphia Family. I also host the book review site called Olivia’s Cup of Tea as well as the opinion paper Expression of Views.
