It was dark now; his packmates should be here soon. Which meant his alone time with Penelope was about to become almost nonexistent, so he didn’t want to waste any more of it talking about Franklin. While Jace’s house in the mountains was large, by anyone’s standards, there were about to be eleven people living there— eleven exceptionally nosy and interested people.

“I don’t know what happens next, Pen.” He went and sat back on the edge of the bed, his hands wanting more than anything to touch her soft skin. “My pack—”

“You really have a pack now? A real wolf pack?”

Baze smiled at that. He and his friends were an anomaly in this day and age; real packs were something of the past. “It happened slowly, over time. The four men I coach baseball with at St. Leasing are all shifters. Over the last year they’ve all met and mated. We live in close proximity of each other. We work together, we spend weekends together.” He shrugged. “Eventually we kind of slid into it I guess.”

“You’re the only one without a mate?” She was speaking to him, but she was looking at her lap.

“I have a mate.”

Her eyes flew to his, round and almost sad. “Oh, I didn’t realize—”

“You’re my girl, Penelope. You always have been, and you always will be. You’re my mate.”

She held her hand up, stopping his sappy declaration. “Baze. Look, I can’t sit here and act like I’m not glad that you aren’t bonded with someone else. But you can’t seriously think of me as your mate.”

“I love you,” Elijah whispered, rubbing the bar of soap over Gideon’s chest.

To Gideon, those words were a hot shower, full stomach, and a hat trick combined; a phrase that he couldn’t remember ever hearing in his life. His father certainly hadn’t shared the sentiment with him, and while he couldn’t be certain whether his mother had or not, he somehow doubted she was ever able to see beyond her drug-induced hazes to recognize he existed to begin with. “I love you” was foreign and formidable. It felt like the promise of forever, which was what Gideon wanted and feared. He didn’t want to give up his fight and fall into forever, where life was comfortable and he was complacent. He didn’t want to let himself go. “I probably do, too,” Gideon replied quietly, the statement he made when he felt too guilty to not muster a response.

“Yeah?” Elijah asked, his eyes bright with excitement.

It killed Gideon that his boyfriend was eager for any scrap of verbal affection. Endlessly, he admonished himself for not being able to lavish Elijah with more.

“Yeah,” he confirmed. Elijah never pushed or prodded. He was tirelessly patient and understanding. Though Gideon was grateful for that patience, he almost wished that Eli would put more pressure on him. He worked well under pressure; he thrived in situations where he had to perform. As much as he wanted to get there, he knew he needed several shoves in the right direction. Being moderately self-aware, Gideon knew if Elijah goaded him, it would lead to epic arguments and his signature obstinance, but then maybe there would be a breakthrough.

“I feel it,” Elijah murmured as several beads of water dripped from his eyelashes. He tucked his face into the crook of Gideon’s neck and kissed the slick skin. “That’s the important thing.” From his tone, it seemed the statement was more a reminder for himself than reassurance for Gideon.

Author Bio

Renee Harless, her husband, and children live in Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.  She studied Communication, specifically Public Relations, at Radford University.

Growing up, Renee always found a way to pursue her creativity. It began by watching endless runs of White Christmas- yes even in the summer – and learning every word and dance from the movie. She could still sing Sister Sister if requested. In high school she joined the show choir and a community theatre group, The Troubadours. After marrying the man of her dreams and moving from her hometown she sought out a different artistic outlet – writing.

To say that Renee is a romance addict would be an understatement. When she isn’t chasing her toddler around the house, working her day job, or writing, she delves head first into a romance novel.
