Author’s Bio & Picture:
Katana Collins is lucky enough to love her day job almost as much as she loves writing. She splits her time evenly between photographing boudoir and newborn portraits and writing steamy romances in a variety of genres -- paranormal, contemporary, new adult and suspense.
She lives in Portland, Maine, with an ever-growing brood of rescue animals: a kind of mean cat, a very mellow chihuahua, and a very not mellow lab puppy... oh yeah, there's a husband somewhere in that mix, too. She can usually be found hunched over her laptop in a cafe, guzzling gallons of coffee, and wearing fabulous (albeit sometimes impractical) shoes.

Interview:

Hi Katana, welcome to Deal Sharing Aunt and congratulations on your newest release OUTLAW!!

Hey! Thank you so much for having me here! I can't believe OUTLAW is finally out! This series has been in the works for (what feels like) SO long!

Let’s learn a little bit about you first…..
1.       When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
In some ways, there was a part of me that was always writing and telling stories. At age four, I put out a “family newspaper” weekly that summed up the events in our household for the week. I printed it out on our word processor (YEP! No household laptops way back then!) and stapled them together and handed them to everyone in my family. We would mail them to my grandparents and aunts and uncles.
So, I was always writing. But it really blossomed for me in college. I happened to take a creative nonfiction class my final semester of my senior year. Basically, it was just an elective that I needed to graduate. And I happened to sign up for this class with an AMAZING, life changing professor--Heather Dune McAdam (also an amazing writer). That one class shifted the trajectory for my entire life. I felt so at home behind a computer creating stories. After I graduated, I signed up for my first writer's conference (in New Orleans) and while I was there I met Linda Ellerbee who offered me a job on the spot at her television studio in NYC.

2.       How many books have you written and which is your favorite (and why)?
Oh man... Well, I've written 18 books. 13 of which are published. Asking me to choose a favorite is seriously impossible, lol. They're all SO different (I jump all over the map in terms of my genres) and so which one is my favorite completely depends on my mood. A good rule of thumb is typically whichever book I'm writing tends to be my favorite, haha. So right now, I'd answer Enforcer (Harrison Street Crew #3) because I'm mid-copy edits for it! What I love about it is how rich and unique the plot is. And gritty. Easily one of the most gritty books I've ever written!

3.       What would you say is your writing style? Do you plot out or panter?
A little bit of both. I definitely do some plotting but I'm not super structured with it. I have my notes and a general idea of the book, but a lot of times I don't know how it's going to end. I usually have about 3 or 4 different ideas for which direction turning points could go and which one I end up deciding on depends entirely on how the earlier writing went and on my mood!

OUTLAW is the second book in THE HARRISON STREET CREW series.

4.       What can you tell us about OUTLAW without including spoilers?
So, the Harrison Street Crew series is structured so that each book focuses on a different member of the car club. OUTLAW features Patrick and Michelle's story (they both play an important and fun part in book 1, EX-CON too!). Basically, without throwing in spoilers (WHICH IS SO HARD!)... Michelle is the Assistant District Attorney for Boston and Patrick finds himself in a bit of a legal pickle (understatement of the year, haha!). But when Michelle begins to doubt the evidence against Patrick, they team up to find the truth. (That was vague enough, right? No spoilers? ;) )

5.       Where do you get the idea for writing this series?
This idea came from a couple of places. I just recently moved out of Brooklyn, NY—but before we moved, there was a car club on our street. They were super nice guys and my husband and I knew their wives fairly well, too since they'd hang outside while their kids played on the sidewalk. After walking by them dozens of times and slowly asking them more and more, the idea hatched from there.
The other side to this idea came from the fact that my husband is a HUGE car … (geek? Fan? Nerd?)... lover. Particularly 70s cars. Even more particularly Detomaso Panteras (which is the car Patrick drives in OUTLAW). It's something we've connected over and, of course, it helped that I had a resource to ask a lot of my questions to while writing!
6.       Research – please share some of the fun and interesting things you had to research and/or learn for this series.
Haha, okay, well I touched on that above. My husband was a GREAT resource for this!  Mostly, CARS. Design of cars from the 70s are very different than now and I would accidentally write a scene where Patrick and Michelle are making out in what would be considered a bench seat, only to find out a Pantera is a two-seater bucket style interior. I've had to research and look up engine parts and different ways to hotwire an engine and how to locate a lo-jack and what to do if you steal a car that HAS a lo-jack (A lot of times, there's nothing you can do... you're most likely screwed!).

7.       What is your most and least favorite thing about the Hero, Patrick Flanagan
Hmmmm. I LOVE a man who can make me laugh. And Patrick has taken his trauma from his brother's death and rather than allow himself to wallow in that depression, he's a prankster and a funny guy. At that same token, my least favorite thing about him is likely the fact that because he uses humor as his diversion, he's a hard guy to get to open up. It has to be a pretty special person to make him lose the humor of a situation.

8.       The Hero can’t take the spotlight all the time, right? What about the Heroine, Michelle Chiccarini?  Favorite and/or Least things? What are some of the best qualities she has?
Michelle is an Italian badass and I love her for it. She tries so hard to follow the rules, but it's just not her nature (even though she's been fighting it for so long!). One of the things I loved exploring with Michelle is the fact that her brother has done some pretty horrific things and the idea that we still love someone even though they're a criminal. We love people despite the awful things they do sometimes and as a woman who devoted her life to putting the bad guys behind bars, how would she deal with that? It has to be extremely difficult (it was difficult to write, too!).

9.       Where any of the characters or their personalities/traits inspired by and/or mirrored from people in your life?
My husband loves playing pranks on me. He loves seeing how gullible I can be and pushing the limits of what I'll believe. Once, we were visiting his family at their lakehouse in NH and he had me convinced that there were creatures in New England woods called “Lightening Raccoons” and when they bite you, they can deliver an electric charge because of how their feet scuffs against the forest floor.
And yes, I believed him. I AM GULLIBLE, MMMMKAY!

Katana, thank you again visiting! Before you go,

10.    What do readers have to look forward to in next book after OUTLAW?
AHHH! The next book, Enforcer! It's Ryan's and Megan's story... again, hard to describe without spoilers. Let's just say, Ryan and Megan have some serious history dating back to Megan's 16th birthday (no, nothing inappropriate). Ryan makes a promise to her on her 16th birthday and then the book flashes forward to now... ten years later... and she's making him keep good on that promise. And it's a DOOZIE!

Thanks so much again for having me!!!!
