Can his safe haven be enough for her?
Emma Meadows never imagined that sticking to her principles against an act of corruption by a New York senator would cost her her job as VP of communications. Heartbroken, she retreats to her cottage in the Adirondacks to lick her wounds and, in the process, rescues an injured dog that only Josh Whitmore can save.
The veterinarian works diligently to bring dog and woman back to full fighting form, until allegations against the senator become more serious. Seeing Emma's reaction to the increasing pressure, Josh realizes that inevitably she'll find a way back to the top…and he'll likely lose her for good.
Kate would love to hear from you! You can connect with her by email, through her website, her Facebook page, Twitter, or mail at PO Box 446, Schomberg, ON, L0G 1T0, Canada.
Thank you for inviting me back
to your blog, Victoria! It’s a pleasure to be here.
How long does it take you
to write a book?
On average,
it takes me three months to write a book. There’s usually another three to four
months for the three stages of the editing process, but during that time I’m
already working on my next manuscript.
What would you say is your
interesting writing quirk?
Hmm . . . I
wish my husband was home so that I could ask him! How about this? My very
favorite place to write is on an airplane, especially if I’m in one of Air
Canada’s amazing new Dreamliner pods! The last time I flewout on a Dreamliner
was in the middle of a snowstorm. Unlike most of the other passengers on the
plane, I didn’t mind the delay to deice, because it gave me extra writing time
in my pod! (Does that pass for quirky?! Please ignore the fingerprints on the
screen in the picture; it’s a touchscreen.)
Where do you get your
information or ideas for your books?
I get ideas from sources as
diverse as hearing a news story on the radio or something I see while walking
our dogs. I read an article some time ago that referred to fictionalizing
facts. I believe every author does this to a degree. I certainly do.
Writing about what I know or
have experienced leads to a more genuine, believable story, in my opinion. My
background and experiences provide a wide variety of ideas and perspectives,
and I hope they serve to enrich my writing! Of course, once I decide on a
story, I do thorough research, as required.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your
books?
I have a series
called the San Diego K-9 Unit series. In each book, the hero or the heroine is
a member of the San Diego Police Department’s K-9 Unit. I had a lot of fun
doing the research for this series, but I
learned some surprising facts.
After
securing the requisite security clearance and necessary approvals, I had the
great pleasure of spending a considerable amount of time with PC Jim Hilton of
Ontario’s York Regional Police. PC Hilton is a K-9 expert and trainer, and is
partnered with explosives detection dog, Max.
(My first introduction
to explosives detection police service dog (PSD) Max.)
So,
here a few things that surprised me.
Did
you know police service dogs have their own police badges?
(PSD Max’s
badge.)
Would
you think a police service dog could scale a six-foot barricade or climb a
ladder . . . conditions the dogs can often face in the field while on duty? I
captured the next picture while Max was demonstrating his agility skills.
(PC Hilton putting Max
through his agility exercises.)
For
all animal lovers, you’d be thrilled to see how enthusiastic and joyous Max is
about doing his exercises. I was surprised to learn that Max’s positive
reinforcement for a job well done is praise and a Kong toy—no treats.
Did
you know that police service dogs often have their own “business cards?”
(PSD Max’s “business
card”)
Finally,
PC Hilton shared with me some of the intricacies of the work he and Max are
called upon to do. Did you know that the K-9 unit officers and their dogs have
one of the most dangerous jobs in law enforcement? You can find out why in When the Right One Comes Along, the first book
in the series!
What do you
think makes a good story?
My editor, Paula Eykelhof, has
said that I write stories with “a combination of deep psychology/emotion and
action.” I take that as a huge compliment, and I think those are elements that
contribute to a reader continuing to turn the pages. Strong likeable
characters, a unique and interesting story, and the type of settings where a
reader might want to visit are also important, in my opinion. My goal is to
write stories that readers will find both emotionally and intellectually
satisfying, and hopefully miss the characters a little after turning the last
page.
What would
you like my readers to know?
I’m
grateful to everyone who has purchased one of my books. Readers make it
possible for me to do what I love! If any of your readers pick up one of my
books, I would love to hear from them, to know how they enjoyed the story.
I would also
love to hear from your readers in the comments section below what theylook for in a good story.
