Book Description:
Trouble from the Past can Kill your
Future.
It's a bad day for Sophie Carter
when she stumbles across a dead body in the woods. But when the suspected
murderer turns out to be a leather-clad vagabond who died in 1889, her
carefully controlled quiet life explodes. Not only is Sophie in the wrong place
at the wrong time, but as a local history buff who loves old legends, she knows
too much about the past to remain uninvolved. Trouble is a killer and no one
can escape.
Detective Jackson Lynch asks
Sophie to help him decipher the legend of the Old Leather Man and unravel the
mystery of the murdered woman. Going against her best judgment, Sophie joins
forces with the distractingly sexy detective on the police investigation and in
pursuit of a killer. Jackson is hot to solve the case as they follow the clues
through Connecticut and New York State, uncovering both legend and fact.
As they move closer to solving
the murder, a series of missteps shove Sophie into Jackson’s arms and straight
into the media. Trouble is everywhere. Jackson’s career begins to crumble and
Sophie becomes a suspect in the heinous crime. The case unravels. The past and
present collide. Sophie is swept into more danger than she could ever imagine
when the Old Leather Man comes looking for her hide to tan.
Excerpt:
Sophie loved to
hike and run, continuously finding new trails to explore in the vicinity. She
enjoyed the convenience of living forty-five minutes outside New York City,
just over the New York border in Glenville, Connecticut. The town was far
enough away that she could still immerse herself in nature, but close enough to
the city that she could attend concerts, events, and culture when she needed a
change. She explored the abundant state parks and open green spaces that
abounded close by, enjoying the diversity found in the change of seasons.
Today was a
little different. Sophie had departed for her run from her home in southern
Connecticut much later than anticipated. A fender bender at the local Starbucks
in Greenwich delayed her further.
In her defense,
she had just tapped the back of the other car when she backed out of her
parking space. There had been minimal damage. The white haired older couple,
Fran and Frank Bunkowsky, while a tad grouchy about what the dent might mean
for their insurance, were overall relatively pleasant.
They even
invited Sophie for tea the next day.

Interview
Where are you from?
With
winter moving in, I hate to admit I live in Trumbull, Connecticut. Brrr. I
dislike the cold. Luckily, my husband,
three cats, and horse help keep me warm.
Tell us your latest news?
Halloween release date for No Trouble at All! So exciting and most appropriate as trouble
from the past can kill your future. Here’s a quick blurb. It's a bad day for
Sophie Carter when she stumbles across a dead body in the woods. But when the
suspected murderer turns out to be a leather-clad vagabond who died in 1889,
her carefully controlled quiet life explodes. Not only is Sophie in the wrong
place at the wrong time, but she is pulled into the murder investigation by a
sexy detective, Jackson Lynch.
When and why did you begin writing?
No Trouble at All is my third novel. My first
novel about zombies, vampires and romance, Apocalipstick,
was published in 2013 followed by a young adult science fiction novel titled Remote, which was published in 2014.
I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember and do it to stay sane,
especially during the winter when it is cold and I hate to venture outside.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Even
after publishing three novels and writing for most my life, there are days I
wonder if I should claim the title “writer.”
How did you come up with the title?
I’m
horrible at coming up with titles, and it is the last thing that I do. I rely
on my family or my editor. I have a
friend, also an author, who told me I had to have the title before stating the
project, but that never worked for me and stressed me out. Instead, I wait until the book is done and
then think about the symbols and themes that evolved. The title of my first book Apocalipstick came from my daughter and
so did Remote. For Apocalipstick,
I was telling her about a scene in the book where the main character, Jenna,
puts on her mother’s lipstick for the first time after the zombie
apocalypse. She is finally out of harm's
way and has the luxury of remembering the past and looking forward to a
possible future. My daughter joked, you
should call the book Apocalipstick and
the title stuck. I have to give my
editor all the credit for the title of my new book. Without her, readers would have ended up with
a title like “Run and Hide.” When we
checked on Amazon, there were hundreds of other books with the same title. Luckily, my editor helped me to brainstorm
and come up with No Trouble at All.
How much of the book is realistic?
No Trouble at All is a romantic
thriller. While I researched the Old Leather Man and the Felt Mill in
Glenville, Connecticut, all the characters are fictional.
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events
in your own life?
The
book, in some ways, could also be considered historical fiction as well as a
romantic thriller. I researched the Old Leather Man and the Felt Mill in
Glenville, Connecticut. I also grew up
in the area. Many of the stories about
the Felt Mill came from my grandparents and mother who lived close by and knew
many people who worked there.
What books have most influenced your life most?
I grew up reading novels by Johanna
Lindsey, Dean Koontz, and Stephen King, among others. While entirely different genres, these
authors inspired me to want to read more and write fiction. These days I am drawn to the books my
students read like Divergent and The Hunger Games. I love authors who can
create vivid conflicts and life-like characters in relationships, romantic or
otherwise. I enjoy reading romances with
action and adventure, and I hoped to create a book with those elements.
What book are you reading now?
I
am reading the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton. Even though it was first published in the
1990s, I just found it. I’m on book
seven and loving them all so far.
What are your current projects?
I’m
currently fascinated by a local ghost story, the White Lady of Easton. Supposedly, she roams through the graves of
the Union Cemetery in Easton, Connecticut.
I hope to incorporate the ghost as a character in my next novel.
What would you like my readers to know?
A
big thank you to Destiny Whispers Publishing and all the amazing people who
work there (especially Leslie). No Trouble at All would not have existed
without their kindness and support.
