Book Description:

OF LOVE AND DARKNESS kicks off the new Twisted Fate shape-shifter series. There are two kinds of shifters: Rakshasa and Light Ones. Rakshasa want to snack on human bones. Light Ones want to protect the humans.

Unfortunately, the Rakshasa are currently winning the battle, as the Light Ones are not fertile. Only one type of Light One, exceedingly rare females called Chala, are able to produce offspring. The Rakshasa know this, and have managed to nearly decimate the population.

Enter Gavin Rowan, a cursed Rakshasa who believes he is a Light One. He feels all his Rakshasa urges to kill, but has been cursed to protect the Light Ones instead.

Throw Sydney Amataya into the mix. She is a Chala– except she doesn't know it. At least not until Gavin saves her from a Rakshasa attack and then declares her as his mate.

But that’s not how Sydney operates. Encouraged by her cross-dressing Fate, William, she refuses Gavin’s claim. If he wants to mate with her–once she gets over the shock of discovering this supernatural world, that is–he's going to have to woo her, impress her, wine and dine her. Romance her. She deserves no less, end of the world be damned.

Tell us your latest news?
I have another release coming out on August third – it’s a contemporary suspense. The third in the Tough Love series, called Delicious Deception. Tried my hand at writing a beta hero instead of the typical alpha, so I’ll be interested to see how readers like him. After that, I’ll be in a Halloween anthology called Bewitching Desires, which comes out October first. Then, I’m re-releasing a Christmas short called The Perfect Christmas, which was part of an anthology called Unwrapping Love that came out last Christmas.
When and why did you begin writing?
My story is pretty typical: I was a bookworm as a kid. I loved to read and write. I still have a notebook of stories I wrote in middle school, tucked away under my bed. In fact, I wanted to be a writer when I was in high school, but by college I had convinced myself I should choose a more “stable” career. So when I was laid off from that “stable” career in 2009, I finally started writing with vigor, and haven’t slowed down since.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
When I received that first email from Crimson Romance, offering me a contract for Naked Truth, which came out last year in June. I know indie publishing is all the rage right now, and I’ve indie published a few books myself, but there is something about the sense of pride and satisfaction when a publishing house wants your book. It’s very validating.
What inspired you to write your first book?
My first published book, The Bartender, is (very) loosely based on a relationship I had in college. He was one of the good ones, and I let him go. I always wondered what if, so I decided to write my own happily ever after.
Do you have a specific writing style?
I tend to put humor into my books, sometimes subtle, sometimes in your face. Of Love and Darkness has lots of humor. It was so much fun to write. Every once in a while, I try to write a little darker, but it’s just not my style. I’m afraid I’ll always lean toward attempting to make my audience laugh.
How did you come up with the title?
Of Love and Darkness was originally titled Cursed and Chosen, which aptly described the plot, but I didn’t like it. I couldn’t come up with something better on my own, so I went to a group of friends who are also authors and asked for help. One of them suggested Of Love and Darkness, which I thought was perfect.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Just because that’s the way something has always been does not mean that it the way it should be or that it’s even the correct way. There are some rather huge twists coming in the next two books in the Twisted Fate series that I hope readers will enjoy and appreciate.
How much of the book is realistic?
Ha ha, well, since it’s paranormal…. Not much J.
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
Not really. William is a compilation of a number of people who have come and gone in my life. Gavin is based on my version of a bad boy turned book boyfriend. Sydney is my version of the innocent but tough heroine.
What books have most influenced your life most?
Oh, my. Jennifer Crusie’s Welcome to Temptation. I adore the humor in that book, and Finn is the perfect, not-really-perfect guy. Nora Robert’s Birthright (my all time fave book) is the best example of love lost and found again, which is my favorite trope of all. Katie McAlister’s Dragon Series, specifically the first four in the series is another example of awesome book humor and quite possibly my favorite book boyfriend of all time (Drake).
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
That’s tough. Katie McAlister or Nora Roberts, probably.
What book are you reading now?
Choosing to Dream by Jennifer Senhaji. It’s the second in a series. Pretty hard to put down, so far.
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
S.L. Jennings. I loved, loved, loved Taint. I haven’t had time to read more from her, but she definitely has a place on my TBR. Also, I want to read Amy Jarecki’s Scottish historicals. She caught my eye because my maiden name is Jarecki, and I was sucked in when I picked up one of her books. I love when something like that accidentally happens.
What are your current projects?
Too, too many! I have first drafts done for the next books in the Lightbearer series and the Twisted Fate series. I need to get them both edited and off to beta readers, before sending to the publishers. I’m involved with a Halloween anthology, possibly a Christmas one. There are more books to come in my Tough Love series. I’ve been working on a fantasy novel, trying my hand at something darker (remember what I said about humor always prevailing, though). And I have been working on a prequel to the Lightbearer series. My intention is for it to be a short, and perma-free. Hopefully by January.

What would you like my readers to know?

I love interacting with readers. I love asking questions on my Facebook page, and I legitimately want to know readers’ answers. It’s what keeps me inspired to write more!
