Patients at a posh Boca Raton rehab center are ending up stiffer than a Boca babe’s smile. Tough PI Harriet Horowitz, once a bedazzled babe herself, signs in at The Oasis at the request of a frightened friend.
As a pattern emerges in the murders, it’s clear the killer is targeting patients with an unusual addiction. How did they end up with the same drug problem at the same time and in the same rehab together? Harriet’s sleuthing leads her down a path of secrets and danger, and what she learns could lead her undercover assignment to a dead end.

Miriam Auerbach is the author of a satirical mystery series set in Boca Raton, Florida and featuring Harley-riding, wisecracking female private eye Harriet Horowitz. Her debut novel, Dirty Harriet, won the Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award for Best First Series Romance. Miriam can only assume that this is because the heroine kills her husband on page one. She lives in South Florida with her husband and their multicultural canines, a Welsh Corgi and a Brussels Griffon.

Interview (Miriam Auerbach)

Where are you from?

I was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia and came to the U.S. with my family when I was seven years old.  I grew up in Denver and went to college and grad school there and in Kansas. Having had enough of cold winters, for the last twenty years I’ve lived in and around Boca Raton, Florida, which is also the setting of my mystery series.

Tell us your latest news?

I’m excited that the fourth book in my Dirty Harriet humorous mystery series, BOCA UNDERCOVER, has recently been released and has garnered great reviews. I had a lot of fun writing it and I’m gratified that readers are having fun reading it!

When and why did you begin writing?

One day, a few years back, I found myself in a funk. I took to bed to eat chocolates and stare at the TV.  A Dirty Harry movie marathon was on. The character, played by Clint Eastwood, was the archetype of the strong, silent hero.  However, I had never really understood Harry’s appeal. But suddenly I had a vision of him as a woman, and it all made sense.  I asked myself, why is it socially acceptable for a man to be the strong silent type, but not a woman? I decided what the world needed was a Dirty Harriet – so I created her and wrote my debut novel of the same name.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I wrote essays in high school that won a few contests, but I didn’t pursue fiction writing until I was in my forties. And then my first book won the Romantic Times Reviewers Choice award for best first novel, proving that it’s never too late to start a successful writing career.

What inspired you to write your first book?

Like most writers, I started as a fan.  A love of detective fiction goes back in my family at least three generations.  My mother introduced me to classics like Agatha Christie and Rex Stout.  Later, as a young adult, I discovered the work of Sue Grafton.  The first book of hers I read, somewhere in the middle of her “alphabet” series, was about a fraudulent chiropractor.  At that time, my first husband was studying to be a chiropractor, and I felt offended on his behalf, so I hated the book. A couple years later I divorced that husband, and suddenly that book became a lot more appealing.  Over the years I read all of Ms. Grafton’s books and discovered similar authors.  So when I invented Dirty Harriet, I decided to give murder a shot (pun intended!)

Do you have a specific writing style?

I’m flattered that my style has often been compared to that of Janet Evanovich.

How did you come up with the title?

In this fourth book in the series, Dirty Harriet, checks herself undercover into an addiction rehab facility to investigate suspicious deaths there.  My working title was Dirty Harriet Gets Clean (wink, wink), but the awesome folks at my publisher’s came up with BOCA UNDERCOVER, which I just love.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

All the books in this series are satires, which means that while they are funny, they also deal with serious social issues.  Without giving away spoilers, I’ll just say that this book, like the others, addresses injustices among the wealthy and powerful versus the rest of us plain old folks.

What would you like my readers to know?

I love connecting with readers via my Facebook page or website – so please get in touch!  And I’d like readers to know that I guarantee they’ll laugh while reading my books!  And that’s something we could all use, right?
