Poisoned by Deceit by Anna Wolfe Guest Post & Giveaway

Title: Poisoned by Deceit (The One Rises, Book 4)
Author: Anna Wolfe
Genre: Urban Fantasy, Paranormal
Website: anna-wolfe.com
Description: Sooner or later, the past catches up. Summoned to the Bay area enclave, Edie knows her past mistakes are big enough to swallow her whole. Makeda DiBaba, the Bay Area enclave’s coven leader, member of the West Coast High Tribunal, and Edie’s ex-mother-in-law, was the one who exiled Edie from San Francisco in the first place. That the air witch now wants Edie to return can only mean trouble. Still, it would be foolish to refuse the summons of such a powerful witch. Edie can only hope that her assistance will be enough to make up for nearly killing Makeda DiBaba’s son and that the witch is no longer out for blood.

Paranormal stories focus on those who have abilities that transform or amplify normal human attributes.  The first thing an author must do is to choose an interesting thing about people to change.  If you look around the paranormal genres, you will see how many different ways authors can alter human capacity.  An interesting ability makes it easier to write an interesting character.  Next, an author has to think about how those abilities would change the way people interact both locally and globally.  That is what I like about the urban fantasy genre (and paranormal romances).

How do I make and keep friends?  What do I deal with that coworker who's driving me crazy?  Why can't I get along with my mother (or father or sibling or best friend)?  What makes someone a good romantic partner?  Should I trust this person?  What kind of job do I want? How do I get laid?  How far will I go to survive?  Who's in charge and how do they stay there?

These are all questions to which we think (and hope) we have answers, but when you throw a paranormal ability into the mix, all of these answers are destabilized.  Old questions require new answers if people can fly or punch through concrete or eat human emotion.  In the asking, we can reimagine our world.  Not the world of the future, that's where the science fiction writers shine.  Not another world entirely, that's the playground of fantasy authors (and sometimes the sci fi folks, too).  Instead, it is the world right outside the door.  Or, at least, that's what I'm thinking as I sit down to work on my stories.
