Title: A Special Love
Author: Krissy Bells
Genre: YA
When Robert Adler and Meredith Conrad fall in love,
all that is left for them to do is prepare to live a fairy-tale life. With the
blessing of their second child, a son named Michael, everything they have
always dreamed of begins to become a reality. But his autism diagnosis is
something they never anticipated. The struggle they face after the diagnosis
puts a strain on their family that begins to tear them apart. Years later,
Michael begins high school, and the true love his older sister Ann Marie finds
there helps bring her insight and appreciation of Michael’s unique gifts and
identity. It might be just what is needed to put their family back together.
Excerpt
As they entered the building, Michael was so excited
he ran ahead through the large corridor, still pulling Ann Marie. Kevin was
paying for their tickets at the front counter, hurrying as quickly as he could.
By the time he caught up to them, he found Ann Marie sitting on a bench,
watching Michael as he stared into the giant glass aquarium. Kevin sat down
next to her, observing Michael. His face was as close as it could be, his smile
bigger than any Kevin had ever seen. He waited until a fish caught his eye and
then followed its swim for as long as he could, back and forth across the long
glass-encased sea wall. Now a bright yellow tang fish was the center of his
attention. He followed it until it was too high for his eye to meet. Next, an
orange sunburst anthias passed, drawing Michael’s attention again. He followed
it to the right until it turned, swimming behind a large sea stone.
“He’ll do this for hours if we let him,” Ann Marie
said.
“It’s amazing,” Kevin replied.
“You’ve never seen a fish tank before?” she joked
flirtatiously.
“Not the fish. Your brother.” Kevin watched Michael
again as he followed another fish, this time a harlequin tuskfish, black,
white, and orange. “The way he loves water—most people never love anything that
much. Look at him.” It was true; Michael followed the fish, wishing he could
live in the water, swimming freely—at least as freely as a captive fish could.
