Author: Jena Leigh
Synopsis: Possessing
the uncanny ability to fry a television set from twenty paces can really wreck
a girl’s social life.
If you’re looking for proof, just ask sixteen-year-old Alexandra Parker. After catching her boyfriend in the arms of the prettiest girl in school, she made the journey from social elite to social pariah in a haze of electricity and exploding electronics. But finding herself at the bottom of Bay View High’s social hierarchy was nothing compared to the shock of discovering who—and what—she really is.
After being zapped out of a burning bookstore by the mysterious Declan—a hero nearly as handsome as he is infuriating—Alex finds herself under the protection of the powerful Grayson family. It’s through them that she learns the truth: that the world she’s always known is nothing like it appears to be... and that she has far more in common with them than she might want to believe.
Now, on the run from a fire-wielding hit man and a secretive government organization, Alex must navigate a strange and treacherous new world filled with superhuman mutants known as Variants. As she begins to unravel the many secrets of her family’s past, she uncovers the real reason for her parents’ death twelve years earlier—and finds out that the threat to her family, and to everyone she cares about, is still dangerously real.

TOP TEN FAVORITE SOUNDS
10. Ben Nichols – His voice is whiskey-soaked, ragged and
slightly broken, but still beautiful to my ears. As the lead singer of Lucero,
Ben Nichols’ distinctive voice is definitely one of my all-time favorite
sounds.
9. Laughter – The one sound on this list that doesn’t
need an explanation. To me, laughter is infectious and I love listening to the
sound of happiness in action.
8. A Coricidin bottle – When it’s being used as a guitar
slide, I mean. There are few things in this world that make me happier than the
sound of a glass bottle being dragged across the frets of a guitar. See almost
any Allman Brothers song for an example (or try listening to their song “Old
Friend” if you want to hear the sound that bottle makes loud and clear!).
7. Thunder – Growing up in the lightning capital of North
America meant I heard my fair share of thunderclaps as a kid. Now, no matter
where I am in the world, the sound of thunder instantly brings me back home
again. Love it.
6. Coffee brewing in the morning — The familiar bubble
and drip of brewing coffee is one of only two sounds enticing enough to
drag me from the warmth and comfort of my bed first thing in the morning. The
other sound is the bleating of an alarm clock that’s been cruelly (and
strategically) placed across the room and completely out of my reach. But that
sound is far, far less pleasant. Give me the dulcet tones of brewing
coffee, any day.
5. Waves hitting the shore — Be it the crashing sound of
an ocean wave, or the gentle lap of water upon a lakeshore, I adore the sound of
water hitting land.
4. Rain falling on a tin roof – It’s one sound that’s
almost guaranteed to lull me instantly to sleep. For an instant coma, just add
a smattering of thunder and a teeny bit of wind. To me, that’s the perfect
recipe for a fantastic night’s sleep!
3. Wind rustling the branches of a tree – One of my
favorite things about living in the mountains of North Carolina was hiking
through the woods on a gorgeous fall day. The sound of wind in the trees always
takes me right back to those hikes, no matter where I happen to be when I hear
the sound.
2. The first listen of a song I’m falling in love with–
In addition to the written word, music is the other love of my life. One
of my favorite things in the world is hearing an amazing new song for the first
time—and feeling the rush of delight that comes with the discovery!
1. The
crackling of a bonfire – A sound that instantly transports me back in time
to my high school and college years. Warm, starry nights spent on a Florida
lakeshore, get-togethers with friends in the Appalachian Mountains, and family
reunions cast in the light of a beautifully setting sun… That sound takes me
back
