Emily Hildebrandt is learning to settle into some of the very strange cases that come through The Redemption Detective Agency’s door.
Like Aunt Tilde’s friend Ruth who claims she’s lost a ghost.
How does one lose a ghost? Apparently when the ghost decides to walk out the door.
But, to make matters more complicated, it’s not just any ghost but the ghost of Ruth’s dead husband. Who was murdered decades ago under very suspicious circumstances.
Emily has no choice but to go back in time and figure out what really happened to Ruth’s husband, in order for everyone to rest in peace.
A spin-off from the Charlie Kingsley Mystery series! The Redemption Detective Agency is a funny, twisty cozy mystery series set in the 1990s featuring silver sleuths solving cold cases. Great for fans of the Thursday Murder Club.
About Michele Pariza Wacek
INTERVIEW
1.
When did you first
realize you wanted to be a writer? When I was three years old. I wanted to
write stories so badly that I taught myself to read, and I’ve been writing (and
reading) ever since.
2.
How long does it take
you to write a book? It depends on the genre I’m writing. For cozy mysteries, it
usually takes me 2 ½-3 months (although I wrote this last book in 2 months, and
I was really pushing myself). For psychological thrillers, more like 3-4 months
(they’re both longer have more complicated plots, so I like to have more time).
3.
What is your work
schedule like when you're writing? I usually set a daily word count and don’t
let myself stop writing until I hit that. Some days I finish up early, which
means I end the workday earlier, but some days I end up writing after dinner to
get my words in.
4.
What would you say is
your interesting writing quirk? What an interesting question. Probably it would
be that I have a terrible time starting. You would think that wouldn’t be the
case, after all I taught myself to read because I wanted to write, but it’s
true. I hate starting. Once I’m writing and in the flow, it’s great, but
starting has always been a struggle for me.
5.
How do books get
published? As an indy, self published author, I do all of the publishing and
marketing myself, although I do work with a couple of publishers on some audios
and translations.
6.
Where do you get your
information or ideas for your books? They tend to find me. I’m not really sure
how.
7.
When did you write your
first book and how old were you? I wrote my first complete novel when I was
sixteen years old on my family’s Apple computer. (I’m Gen X, so I was in high
school when my dad brought home one of the first Apple computers and set it up
in the dining room.) I’m not sure how long it was, I seem to recall it was
something like 150 pages when it was printed out. I have no idea what happened
to it, and it’s probably for the best as I don’t think it was very good.
8.
What do you like to do
when you're not writing? Read, take walks, play with the dog and watch football
and competition cooking shows.
9.
What does your family
think of your writing? They’ve always been very supportive of me, which I’m
forever grateful for.
10.
What was one of the most
surprising things you learned in creating your books?
11.
How many books have you
written? Which is your favorite? I’ve written 23 full length books and 5
novellas. I’m not sure which one would be my favorite (it’s sort of like asking
a parent who their favorite child is) but I will say I’ve been very much
enjoying writing The Redemption Detective Agency series. It’s a departure from
what I normally write—a lot more humor and more romance—and I’ve been having a
lot of fun with it.
12.
Do you have any
suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they? Read more
and write more. I know that’s what Stephen King also suggests, but I think he’s
right. The more you read and write, the better you’ll get.
13.
Do you hear from your
readers much? What kinds of things do they say? I love hearing from my readers.
I’m so grateful for them. Usually whatever I hear is very helpful, whether it’s
telling me how much they love one of my books or helpfully pointing out a few
typos, I’m so thankful they’ve taken time out of their busy schedule to reach
out.
14.
Do you like to create
books for adults? Yes.
15.
What do you think makes
a good story? To me, it’s a story that I have trouble putting down. Yes,
mysteries and thrillers have an edge here as they tend to be more page-turners,
but I remember not being able to put down books like The Poisonwood Bible,
I Know This Much is True and Pillars of the Earth. To me, those
were all compelling stories, even if they wouldn’t be classified as a
traditional page-turner.
16.
As a child, what did you
want to do when you grew up? Be a writer. Also a veterinarian, until I realized
I would need to somehow pass organic chemistry and I knew that wasn’t going to
happen.
17.
What Would you like my
readers to know? It’s great to meet you, and I would love it if you would give
one of my books a try. I know you have a lot of books to choose from (and
likely a lot of books on your TBR list) and I would be grateful if one of my
books did make your list.
