Interview
A River of Resentment
by Kristen King
Where are you from?
I’m originally from Chicago and grew up there. After my husband and I joined the military, we spent twenty years living all over the U.S. in addition to the U.K. and Japan. Now, we call Colorado home for our family.
Tell us your latest news?
The fourth book in my Hollow’s Glenn Coven Mystery series just released in addition to the audiobook for number three. I’m in the process of writing book five and a novella mystery to come out in 2025.
When and why did you begin writing?
When I was young, I wrote lots of poetry, and I enjoyed many other creative pursuits that kept my ideas churning as well. I dabbled with writing throughout the years for blogs or creating podcasts. Although, I didn’t really start seriously writing until a few years back when I worked as a life coach. I wrote guided meditations and published a quarterly magazine about intentional living. That’s when I decided to write a couple nonfiction books to get a broader message across about living intentionally.
After doing nonfiction writing for a while, I kept getting the urge to try my hand at fiction. Once I started, I caught the bug pretty quickly and haven’t looked back. Now, I’m focused on writing paranormal cozy mysteries. It’s such a fun creative outlet that includes all the things I love like magic, cozy vibes, and mystery. Plus, I get to also do the other creative stuff along with writing like making my own book covers and recipe testing. I feel like all my creative pursuits have come together nicely to do this work.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I’d say when I published this book, A River of Resentment, I decided I was a writer. It was my second fiction book after writing a couple nonfiction and doing some magazines. When this one came out, I knew this path was one I was meant to follow and that something had been leading me to this all along. Everything just clicked, and I felt the muse kicking in more strongly than it had ever done before.
What inspired you to write your first book?
The first book I wrote was a nonfiction book for multipassionate creatives. It came from a deep desire to go against the grain and allow myself to fit into more than just one small box that society tells us all to fit into. I’ve gotten so much wonderful feedback from that book as people connect so deeply to that message. It really was the catalyst for me to live a life on my terms and embrace creativity in whatever forms felt most inspiring to me without fitting into a mold.
My first fiction book came out of a desire to fully embrace the muse. I love the four elements and embrace a way of being that connects deeply with the universe and nature. Plus, I’m such a massive fan of cozy, Hallmark movies and small town mysteries. So the first book gave me the gift of creating a cozy fantasy world that encapsulated all the magic and connective elements that I love to be immersed in myself.
Do you have a specific writing style?
I prefer writing in third person omniscient point of view because I like being the observer of all the characters. It gives you the ability to understand each one’s thoughts, motivations, and feelings but also stand back and see how they all relate to the bigger picture. I guess I've always been a big picture thinker, so that’s my comfort zone.
Also, to me, stories are so much better when they evoke a strong feeling. I really try to add bits here and there that demonstrate the cozy vibes of Hollow’s Glenn with the scents of Eve’s magical pastries at the Forest Brew, the Edison bulb lights strung through the trees in Aunt Jo’s garden, or even the warm hearth fire with Tavish, the cat familiar snuggled underneath it at the girls’ paper shop, Parchment and Pine. To me, being immersed in the world on the pages, serves as one of the best parts to reading a good story.
How did you come up with the title?
The titles in this series are all based around the four elements, since the characters are hereditary, elemental witches. In A River of Resentment, the story focuses around water as the main element in the mystery, and Simone, the coven water witch, must take a major role in uncovering who is at fault and how to stop them. Also, in each title for the series, I include something about the motivation for the crime that gives a bit of a hint for what to look out for. In this instance, there’s some sort of underlying resentment that bubbles up to cause the murder. The title along with the graphics I use on the book cover create a bit of a fun “easter egg” hunt to track down those connections within the story.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
I want readers to understand the power they hold within themselves. We’re all connected to each other and to nature, and there’s so much potential in that. We have the power to change our lives, change the lives of others, heal the earth, preserve our futures, and even to feel worlds beyond our own if we allow ourselves to open up. Whether we’re baking a cake or raising a family, there’s connection and powerful creation energy in all of it. If we could each recognize and embrace that as a positive opportunity, then the world would be a much different place.
What would you like my readers to know?
I’d like this book to be read as a gift of comfort and reassurance that life is magical and supportive. Even in hard times when life throws us twists and turns, something good will come out of it all. Read these pages if you’d like a warm hug, an understanding friend, or a problem that gets solved by doing it together. Nothing is too big to be overcome, especially for those who keep magic in their hearts and positivity in their minds.
