“You don’t
realize how special you are, do you?”
Trudy smiled.
“Special to you.”
“Yes, and
special as a psychic.” Levi straightened, stood, and threw his leg over the
seat, sitting backwards in it to face her. Wrapping an arm around her waist, he
hauled her up against the back of the chair. “What I do isn’t anything special.
Talking to the deceased is a psychic staple. But what you can do . . .
connecting with the thoughts of a living being . . . that is rare. In fact, I
don’t know of anyone else who can actually do it. I know a couple of people who
claim to be able to, but you’re the only psychic I’ve ever met who is the
genuine article.”
She listened,
but found holes in his argument. “What you do is special. You told me yourself
that your accuracy sets you apart from other mediums.”
“Yes, that’s
right. I’m good. Damn good.” He winked at her. “But you’re a diamond among
crystals. You sparkle so brightly, you blind the rest of us.”
Her heart melted
into a puddle as he gazed at her with undisguised admiration. “I’m not . . . am
I? You really don’t know anyone who can do what I do?”
He shook his
head slowly, deliberately, his blue eyes shining. “Nary a one.” He regarded her
for a few moments before his lips twitched into a grin. “Does that freak you
out?”
“A little.” She
swallowed the lump in her throat so that her voice would emerge stronger.
“Quintara has told me that I’m one of a kind, but I figured she was
exaggerating – as she’s known to do.”
“This time your
flamboyant mentor wasn’t embellishing the truth.” He rested his hands on her
hips, his long fingers spreading across her jeaned backside. “At the risk of
freaking you out more, I think you’ve only begun to reveal the extent of what
you can do. You’re holding back because you’re afraid. I understand. I’ve been
there.” His fingers flexed on her hips. “Take your time. Let it come to you
gradually and don’t be scared. You’re strong and brave. You’ll be able to
handle it.”
“Handle what?”
She shook her head as a ball of nerves grew in her stomach.
“Your gift. Your
incredible gift.”
“You said you’d
help me.”
“And I will. I’m
here for you.”
She framed his
achingly handsome face in her hands and her heart doubled in size. “How’d I get
so lucky?”
“I’m the lucky
one.” He turned his face so that he could kiss her palm, but not before she saw
darkness pass through his eyes like a specter. “And you’ll agree with me
whole-heartedly once we’re in Missouri.”

the Author:
Author of more than 45 novels,
Deborah lives in Oklahoma. She has been a full-time writer since she graduated
from the University of Tulsa. Her background as a newspaper reporter and editor
helped her to write fast and enjoy research. After she sold her first few
books, she quit newspaper work to become a freelance writer and novelist.
Deborah's first novel was published in the late 1970s and her books have been published
by Jove, New American Library, Harlequin, Silhouette, and Avon. She has been
inducted into the Oklahoma Authors Hall of Fame and she is a charter member of
the Romance Writers of America. She is also a member of the Author's Guild. She
is an active volunteer with the Animal Rescue Foundation and is a foster home
for dogs until they find their forever homes.

Where
are you from?
I was born in Hayti, Missouri. However, I left there
when I was 2 and have spent the rest of days in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Tell
us your latest news?
Number 3 in my Mind’s Eye series is being well
received by readers and reviewers!
When
and why did you begin writing?
I suppose I’ve loved to write since I learned how to
do it. I was an imaginative child and made up stories and acted them out. I
wrote my first short story when I was about 10 and it was a “sweet romance.”
When
did you first consider yourself a writer?
Probably when I was in high school and was writing
for the school newspaper.
What
inspired you to write your first book?
Mary Stewart’s The
Moonspinners. I loved that book and it made me wonder if I might be able to
write a book, as well. After a steady diet of romances, I finally sat down and
wrote one of my own.
Do
you have a specific writing style?
I suppose I do, but that’s up to readers to
determine.
How
did you come up with the title?
Well, it wasn’t easy! I wanted the title to be a
little mysterious but also a little romantic. And it needed to convey something
about being psychic, too. Whew!
Is
there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
The main message in the Mind’s Eye series is not too
judge people too quickly. What you “see” isn’t all there is to see.
How
much of the book is realistic?
I think it’s a realistic story with realistic
characters.
Are
experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
I do have a friend who is psychic and he’s struggled
with it all his life. He can’t do what Levi and Trudy do – but he can read
minds and he sometimes knows when something bad has happened to someone he’s
close to.
What
books have influenced your life most?
Romances, of course!
If
you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
I’ve had several, but if I had to choose one it
would be LaVyrle Spencer. Her books made me want to try my hand at historical romances
and her writing has taught me a lot about the little things that mean so much.
It’s not always the big, crushingly emotional scenes that stay with you, but
the small, quiet ones that burrow into your heart and make you feel or remember
something personal and private.
What
book are you reading now?
Right now I’m reading “Spin” by CD Reiss and I’m
listening to “On My Knees” by J. Kenner.
Are
there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
Of course! I read all the time and find new authors
I love almost every month. They’re “new” to me, but most have been around
awhile. CD Reiss, Mia Sheridan, and Abigail Barrette are three who come to
mind.
What
are your current projects?
I’m writing an historical romance set in Texas a
couple of years after the Civil War. It’s about how the war changed people and
forced them into lives that were not what they’d envisioned for themselves.
After I’m finished with it, I’m going to write #4 in the Mind’s Eyes series.
What
would you like my readers to know?
That I appreciate every single person who reads my
books – especially my Mind’s Eye series. I will be honest – I love this series
and the characters of Levi and Trudy. I have so much more to write about them!
Although I’ve been published since 1979 as a novelist, I’m still “unknown” to
most readers and I’ve trying hard to correct that. My novels get good reviews
and I’ve worked with several major publishers, so I think I’m doing something
right! I just need more readers who like my books to spread the word about
them.
