Interview
Where are you from?
I’m a corn-fed Midwestern girl who has bounced from
one coast to the other and eventually landed in Seattle, Washington. I love the
mountains and the water, neither of which we had where I grew up.
Tell us your latest news?
I am super excited to be working with Silkwords.com
on a Reader Vote story. The book will be released in sections, and readers will
vote on what happens next at each juncture. It’s going to be so much fun!
When and why did you begin writing?
The first time I remember writing fiction was in
grade school. I wrote short stories, some of which I still have, and I even
wrote a novel, a gothic romance that will never see the light of day. I loved
romance books even back then.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Good question. I considered myself a “real writer”
the day I first earned professional rates on one of my projects. Now, as a
seasoned professional, I can see that I was actually a real writer from birth.
It’s in my bones.
What inspired you to write your first book?
My love of reading. I consume as many books as I can
get my hands on, and I wanted to make one for others to read. I have a strong
creative urge that has stayed with me throughout my life.
Do you have a specific writing style?
Perhaps. I don’t actively try to have a style. I
write many different kinds of stories, and so I like to stretch my writing
muscles.
How did you come up with the title?
The title came from a line in the book. When I’m
writing, I get in “the zone,” and sometimes, the characters surprise me with
their reactions. This was one of those instances. When Adele tells her friend
Karen what she has planned, Karen’s response is, “Oh my God! Hello! Illegal
lane change!”
Is there a message in your novel that you want
readers to grasp?
I try to portray my female characters as strong or
learning to be strong. If you readers take anything from my book, it’s that you
too can be strong and make your own decisions. I’ve seen too many women bowled over
by bossy men in my lifetime.
How much of the book is realistic?
The characters are all fictional, but I find that
Adele and I have a lot in common. I’m no lawyer, but I did have a broken
marriage, and I did give up the idea of children for my career. It’s
interesting to me to explore her thoughts and actions.
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events
in your own life?
Not in a specific sense, but in a general sense,
yes. I think we all go through rebellious periods when we want to be in charge
of our own lives. That’s a very personal challenge for me.
What books have influenced your life most?
I believe in magic and the ability to change your
life if you don’t like it. That came from books written by Richard Bach, most
notably Illusions: The Adventures of a
Reluctant Messiah, and Jonathan
Livingston Seagull.
If you had to choose, which writer would you
consider a mentor?
I’ve never had a direct mentor, but I’ve learned a
lot about writing by studying the novels of Barbara Cartland, Mary Stewart, Phyllis
A. Whitney, and Neil Gaiman.
What book are you reading now?
Right now, I’m reading If He’s Wicked, by Hannah Howell, and I’m loving it. I recommend
it.
What are your current projects?
In addition to embarking on this romance adventure
with Silkwords.com, I also make games, both for a living and in my spare time.
I’m currently working on a hidden-object/adventure/puzzle game with a strong
female lead and some sassy romance thrown in for fun. You can check out the
website and follow our progress at gamesomniverse.com.
What would you like my readers to know?
I’m am thrilled to be finally indulging my love of
romance and putting my writing skills toward this genre. It’s long overdue. I
hope you enjoy what I create.
