But Louisa assumes her bad-boy ex, Matteo, sent it in a quixotic attempt to gain her attention.  Louisa may have dismissed the ghosts, but the ghosts aren’t quite done with her.

When the bodies of two glassmakers wash up on Murano Island, the cryptic messages persist. Reluctantly, Louisa calls upon Matteo to help decipher the clues. And before she knows it, a flame that was never fully extinguished is rekindled.  Sensing that her sister is in over her head, Barbara Mangotti rushes to the rescue, only to be lured away by two handsome Venetian men.

What Happens In Venice -- A Trinity

Book One, Love Spirits
Book Two, Lagoon Lure
Book Three, Magic Island

Excerpt #1 (325 words):

From the Top of Our Great Bell Tower Saint Mark Square Venice, Italy  Dear wide-eyed tourist,             Don’t go to Venice.
But if you do, don’t fall in -- in a canal, in love or into Venice itself. As if you have a choice. Hear us cackling?         Listen. We came to warn you about La Serenissima, the Most Serene One, as Venice has been called since before the Middle Ages. You will not heed our warning and you will come looking for us. How do we know? It happens every time a Venetian ghost story is told.             As ancient protectors of the Venetian republic, we ghosts guard her virtues of which she has many. One reason we love her, and you will too, is that she is stuck in time. Did you know Venice functions without motorcars or trucks? We don’t like motorcars or trucks. Hundreds of tiny islands sewn together by foot bridges leaves no need for noisy, fume-spewing vehicles, thankfully.
We prefer floating.
Our classic transport is the gondola. Mostly reserved for you tourists now, gondolas are and always have been helmed by the most prestigious oarsmen in the world -- highly trained gondoliers who stand while rowing through the labyrinth of canals. They don’t mind when we ride with or without you while they serenade us with opera, Frank Sinatra songs and romantic favorites.    Ah yes, romance. As one visitor put it, “It’s their schtick, a Venetian ploy, an act to get sexy with you.” It is true. Venice equals romance equals sex. If the shadows of Venice frighten you or you feel like you’re in a dream, have fun with it, float with us. We are watching over you. We want to further your journey to a more magical life because we think a person is charmed by a trip to La Serenissima.   It could change your soul forever. Just ignore this cautionary tale.  We remain in your service, The Venetian Ghosts

Interview of Diana Cachey

Tell us your latest news?

This week, I ran from two hurricanes about to make landfall in the Hawaiian Islands. Yep, to celebrate the recent release of Love Spirits, my novel set in romantic Venice, I was leisurely lying on sand listening to the gentle sound of light surf when a nearby sun-bather spoke of a rare occurrence -- not one but two tropical cyclones were barreling towards my beach! I evacuated safely to the mainland, far away from Iselle and Julio, Hurricane level storms set to unleash their wrath on remote, beautiful and spiritual islands I adore. Not much breaking news, right?

When and why did you begin writing?

At a very early age, possibly in the womb, I thought writing was my destiny. I couldn’t NOT write, even when I tried to escape and became a lawyer twenty years ago. I published two academic papers in law school, edited eight law review issues, drafted legal opinions that helped create case law for an appellate judge, pumped out motions and briefs at a blistering pace and eventually wrote travel and lifestyle stories for local newspapers, trade publications and blogs. In 2009, I did the write thing, stopped faking it and put pen to paper on my novels.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

In grade school, I won a contest published in the newspaper, as a teen I wrote poems, short stories, in college I majored in literature, wrote plays, more poems, essays, stories. I always considered myself a writer.
What inspired you to write your first book? The city of Venice!

Do you have a specific writing style?

Because of my training, my style is literary but with humorous, quirky and somewhat reflective, spiritual tones.

How did you come up with the title?

After a long process -- brainstorming with writers, mastermind groups, coaches, giving favorite choices to everyone for votes -- a flight attendant en route to Italy said "What Happens in Venice" and we all went "yes!" Titles for separate volumes within the Venice Trinity were picked to reflect that book’s focus after it was finished.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Follow your heart, pursue dreams, find fun in foreign lands because if you do, the universe will provide more in a most mysterious and magical manner.

How much of the book is realistic?

There are real ghosts in Venice, you know, or so it has been passed down through legend. The rest is made up. Seriously, most Venetian locations are real with a few fictitious ones. Characters? Just figments of my active imagination, pulled from experience or dreams or delivered by the muse, if it decides to show up.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Oh, what happens in Venice, wouldn’t you like to know? I’ve travelled extensively to Venice since my first visit in 2002. I’ve stayed in every area, all six sestieres (as they call them in Venetian), and on the major lagoon islands. Therefore, my novels are based on true Venice secrets (as shown in my YouTube videos, check them out). Perhaps readers should study my novels, explore Venice then decide which parts are imaginary.

What books have most influenced your life most?
Wuthering Heights, the first novel I couldn't put down, romance! Also when I read Steven King's first novel, Carrie,  I Was In Awe. Still am, as a matter of fact.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
Steven King, I'd walk over a team of professional linebackers to get inside that mind.

What book are you reading now?

Any Steven King, the minute one comes out. Science fiction books, like those of Scalzi and Asimov, have become my new obsession -- I’ve even started sci-fi novel.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
Gilllian Fynn

What are your current projects?
Editing and proofing finals of Lagoon Lure -- What Happens In Venice, Book Two and Magic Island -- What Happens In Venice, Book Three. Stay tuned!

What would you like my readers to know?

Writing fiction isn’t easy, even though great writers make it look so. Treasure the books because loads of blood, sweat, tears, screams and meltdowns have probably gone into them. And thanks for reading! We write for you Readers. YOU make it happen.
