Publication date: August 5, 2014
Publisher: Month9Books, LLC.
Author: Lisa M. Basso
Rayna struggles to piece her life back together, but hiding in plain sight from the police, the SS Crazy, and the Fallen isn’t a foolproof plan—something Kade, the World’s Worst Roommate, reminds her of everyday. The late nights of failing to teach Ray how to protect herself against the Fallen are getting to Kade, changing him in ways he doesn’t like, and after a family emergency sends Ray back into Cam’s arms, Kade decides he’s had enough. News of Rayna’s resurfacing brings both angels and the Fallen to San Francisco by the dozens, all eyes scouring the city for the girl with the gray wings. Rayna will need both Kade and Cam’s help to ensure her family’s safety, navigate the new dangers and enemies springing up all over the city, and manage the surprises that arise with her new set of wings.

Interview
Where are you from?
- I am a proud San
Francisco (California) native, born and raised.
Tell us your latest news?
- In personal news, I
just got married back in May and am planning an awesome honeymoon for the end
of the year in Hawaii.
When and why did you begin writing? - I started writing in high school after reading S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders and learning she wrote the book when she was around my age. I first started with Outsiders fan fiction, then moved on to X-Men fan fic, eventually finding ways to create my own characters and spin my own stories. From then on I was hooked. I wrote on-and-off for several years. Somewhere close to ten years ago I decided writing was it for me and have been writing full-time ever since.
When did you first
consider yourself a writer?
- That’s a great question because you can write for years before you actually
feel comfortable telling people “I’m a writer.” For me it was when my first
short story was published. Interesting side note, I didn’t call myself an
author until a few months after A Shimmer of Angels released. Funny how we lack
self-confidence when we should be shouting it from the rooftops.
What inspired you to
write your first book?
- Sometime in high school I wrote a lot on a single story. It ended up being more
than half a book. When I decided to get serious about writing, I finished that
book. The inspiration for the first half of that book was super powers, comic
books, and kissing scenes. The inspiration for the second half of that book was
a lot of the same, expect my style had changed. I threw in a lot of darker
elements from horror, suspense, and urban fantasy (thanks to the book I had
been reading at that time).
Do you have a specific
writing style?
- I think every writer has their own writing style. It takes not only a lot of
writing, but also a lot of reading to hone your own specific voice. I love
writing in first person, either past or present tense, I’m not attached to one
or the other. Instead of writing for the
character, I try to write more as the
character, letting their voice come through my fingers and onto the page. That
way each book series has a different voice and readers won’t mistake one main
character with another.
How did you come up with
the title?
- The original title for A Shimmer of Angels was Shimmering Angels. My
publisher suggested the name change while we were in edits. Fun fact, they
named all three titles. Another fun fact, I kind of suck at titles so I was a
bit relieved when I saw the titles for A Slither of Hope and A Matter of Time
because I love them so much.
How much of the book is
realistic?
- A Slither of Hope, along with A Shimmer of Angels, are both set in the real
world. Where the angels, the Fallen, and the main character, Rayna are
concerned, fantastic things happen around them. While the books are young adult
fantasy, I did try to keep as many real world happenings as realistic as I
could.
Are experiences based on
someone you know, or events in your own life?
- The great thing about writing fantasy is you get to make things up.
Considering Ray’s world is turned upside down in book two, I can gladly say
that none of it comes from personal experience, just a sick love for torturing
my characters.
What books have most influenced
your life most?
- Since The Outsiders did get to me to start reading and writing on my own, I
guess it would have to be that book.
If you had to choose,
which writer would you consider a mentor?
- I like to think that each and every time we read a book we take a little
something away. I haven’t been influenced by any single author in particular,
but rather I learn something from each author that helps me better my own
writing.
What are your current
projects?
- Well, besides A Slither of Hope releasing (yay!), and working on edits for
the third and final book in the Angel Sight trilogy, A Matter of Time, I’m also
working on a passion project I can’t quite talk about yet, but hope to share
soon.
Name one entity that you
feel supported you outside of family members.
- My biggest supporter of my writing has always been my husband. When I decided
writing was what I wanted to do with my life, he (my boyfriend at the time) told
me to go for it. He pushed me on the days when writing was hardest. When rejection
got me so down I couldn’t find the energy to write, he helped pick me back up
so I could go on. He has always been my biggest cheerleader. Ha! Now I have the
image of him in my mind dressed as an actual cheerleader and it won’t go away.
Do you see writing as a
career?
- Writing is most definitely a career. It takes drive, passion, and
determination for writers to complete a book from start to finish. There have
been days when I’ve worked sixteen hours, barely stopping to eat or sleep.
If you had to do it all
over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
- I am probably more
proud of A Slither of Hope than any other book I’ve worked on so far. As it is
now, I wouldn’t change a single letter. But…ask me again in a year. J
What would you like my
readers to know?
- A Slither of Hope is a
fun, twisty maze of angel goodness with high stakes and some pretty awesome
characters. I hope you read it and I hope you love it. Thank you!
