Two wandering souls discover that true love needs no words in this explosive, fantastical novel from Vonnie Davis.

Somehow able to telepathically communicate with animals, Paisley Munro has found meaning in her so-called gifts by working as a veterinary assistant. But while traveling to Scotland for a relative’s funeral, Paisley fears that she really has lost her mind. Out in the highlands, she hears distinctly human thoughts coming from a wild bear. Terrified and desperate, she returns to the lodge and collapses in the powerful arms of its owner, a mysterious man with whom she shares a simmering attraction.

Creighton Matheson and his fellow shape-shifters have been roaming this land freely for centuries. Now Paisley may inherit his home, putting his kind in grave danger. His mistrust only deepens when he realizes she can read his mind. Yet he cannot deny that this tantalizing woman makes him burn with desire—and hunger for the prospect of a tender love. Now Creighton must decide which would hurt more: revealing the truth or losing Paisley forever.

Author Info
Vonnie Davis, who studied English at Penn State, likens herself to a croissant: crusty, wrinkled, flaky—and best served with strong coffee. After a career as a technical writer, she’s spending her retirement playing fairy godmother to her characters, giving them their happily-ever-afters. Six fantastic, talented kids call her “Grandma” and brighten her world in so many ways. She lives in Southern Virginia with her husband, author Calvin Davis.

Q&A with Deal Sharing Aunt

Where are you from?
My husband and I are retired and live in Lynchburg, Virginia. I grew up in south-central Pennsylvania.
Tell us your latest news?
I’ve finally figured out how book two of this series is going to end. What a relief!
When and why did you begin writing?
Like so many, I started writing short stories in elementary school and then stopped. The dream stayed with me for nearly fifty years until one day my husband took me by the shoulders, led me into our office and told me not to come out until I had four pages written.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
When my agent called and said she’d gotten an offer on a book of mine.
What inspired you to write your first book?
I’d written a book with a beta hero and no one liked it, but me. So I was in a snit, running the vacuum, taking my frustrations out on the carpets and grumbling. “I suppose if I’d written an alpha hero, everyone—agents and editors—would have loved it. Well, I’m not writing what everyone else does.” My muse—hussy that she is—sat on my shoulder and picked a piece of broccoli from her teeth. “Well, if you think you can’t write an alpha male, then stick to your boring betas.” I shot her a dirty look, put the vacuum away and powered up my laptop. I wrote chapter one with the most bizarre opening I could think of with an alpha male and finished it three months later.
Do you have a specific writing style?
Every story is different, requiring a different writing style. Often my heroes come to me at night as I’m drifting off to sleep. They’ve ridden in on horseback or on a Harley or with a swagger. We hold conversations, so I get a sense of who they are. My heroines are harder to get to know and often require my going back to page one and rewriting them. I like when they allow me to see their points of pain, that painful thing that happened in their past that makes them act and react in a certain way.
How did you come up with the title?
Originally, the title for this book was “When Paisley Meets Plaid.” Paisley is the heroine’s name and she travels to Scotland so it seemed cute to me. My agent didn’t like it and we changed it to A Highlander’s Beloved. My editor thought we should go with A Highlander’s Obsession, Book one of the Highlander’s Beloved Trilogy.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
We’re all different, yet lovable and needed within society as long as we operate within the framework of the laws.
How much of the book is realistic?
Creighton, my bear-shifter hero, came to me one night and told me the legend of the bears and Vikings. He also told me how bears were extinct in Scotland. So, of course, the first thing I did the next morning was power-up my laptop and start googling if bears were indeed extinct. I found several articles where the government was trying to re-introduce the bears into the Highlands. It made chills do the Highland jig up my spine.
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
I like to think Gram is my skinny alter-ego and she uses some of my expressions, but other than that this is purely fiction.
What books have most influenced your life most?
I love books where women take life’s adversities and turn them into advantages.
What would you like my readers to know?

That you are stronger than you ever give yourself credit for. That you can overcome most anything…perhaps not as you’d like, but in a powerful way. I speak with a stutter and have always longed to have fluent speech, to have words flow from me in a smooth manner. Now they do…only on the written page. Women are so, so strong. Love yourselves, good points and bad.
