Matt Archer: Redemption by Kendra C. Highley Interview & Giveaway

Young Adult Paranormal
Date Published: July 3, 2014

“There’s more to me than you know…”

When Matt Archer’s sister, Mamie, said those words to him three years ago, he had no idea how prophetic they were, or what this would mean for his family.

Now, he knows. And it changes everything, bringing the war right to Matt’s doorstep.

In the epic conclusion to the Matt Archer series, the endgame is near. Betrayed by an enemy, the wielders have been called off the hunt by their own government, despite increasing reports of paranormal activity—and deaths—worldwide. Matt is forced to sit on the sidelines, knowing that proving monsters exist means revealing who—and what—he is. Soon the world will know his name…which will only make his job harder.

Matt’s only hope resides with a man he barely knows—his father. If Erik Archer can put together the final puzzle before the monsters do, maybe they’ll have a chance. Maybe.

Mystery, tragedy and the power of family combine as Matt races to win the war and save the people he loves. There’s just one thing he’s afraid of…

It might already be too late.

She loves monsters, vacations, baking and listening to bad electronica.

Interview:
What inspired you to write your first book?
I’d been thinking about a story for a few years. I grew up in Oklahoma and Native American history had always interested me, so I wrote a paranormal based on the legend of Thunderbird. The premise was good, but I was just beginning to write then, so those novels probably won’t ever see the light of day.

Do you have a specific writing style?
I’m a pantser, but I’m trying very hard to start outlining more. I like how a story grows organically. So, if I have a beginning and ending in mind, I just go for it.

How did you come up with the title?
The title for REDEMPTION was in the works from the very first book. It was based on the legend about the knives, but also because several of the characters are redeemed in some way.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Never quit. Never give up. If something’s right, keep fighting as long as you can.

How much of the book is realistic?
Heh, well, magic knives, monsters…the battle of good and evil on a universal scale? Not entirely. But the military equipment and staging is as realistic as I could get it. I did quite a bit of research on that aspect, as well as about the countries Matt visits.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
The only thing that’s based on someone else’s experience is in the Epilogue, but since it’s a spoiler, I’ll leave it at that. If you’re curious, I mention the scene and the person in the acknowledgements.

What books have most influenced your life most?
Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Ender’s Game, Tom Sawyer, The Grapes of Wrath, Emma, Pride and Prejudice, A Wrinkle in Time and The Lord of the Rings

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
Laurie Halse Anderson.  She writes with such truth and force…and she’s a genuinely caring person.

What book are you reading now?
I just finished Under the Never Sky (loved it—I’m saving the next 2 for my vacation) and right now I’m rereading Raven Boys in anticipation of Lily Blue, Blue Lily’s release.
What would you like my readers to know?
Hmmm…chocolate rules? J
