This story evokes strong feelings for the characters. You’ll love one and hate another. You’ll feel sorry for one or hope that a certain character dies! - JW Conway

Pencil Author Interview
In one sentence, tell us about
yourself.
-I am a twenty-six year old school nurse and Lupus survivor
from Brooklyn, New York!
What were you like in high school?
In high school, I pretty much got along with everyone. I was
quiet and maintained top honors throughout the four years. I did have a small group of friends but I was
one of those people who always felt lonely no matter how many people were
around.
What genre do you write in and are
there any genres that you’d like to break into?
-Right now, I try to write fast paced suspenseful thrillers.
I’d love to eventually write horror novels, specifically in the children/young
adult age group. I grew up on R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps books.
What is the name of your latest book
and why did you give it that title?
-The name of my latest book is called, The Asylum. I chose
this name because the main character, Melissa Andrews, spends most of her time
in an old asylum just after she is scheduled to be executed by lethal
injection.
Can readers find any messages or
morals in The Asylum?
-The main character, Melissa, transitions through many
different emotions. She is guarded, observant and suspicious of everyone around
her. With the obstacles thrown in her way, we see how she fends for herself and
decide whether she has grown to overcome them. The messages or morals that I’d
like readers to take away from The Asylum is to take responsibility of your
actions and to realize that many times the events of our lives were never in
our hands. You may simply have to take what life has given to you and make the
most of it.
Were any of your characters inspired
by people you know?
Yes! I’ve worked in a mental health clinic in an underserved
community. Every day, I met different personalities and learned something new
when I interacted with the patients. Some patients suffered from common mental
illnesses like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Once in a while, I’d
encounter a patient suffering from psychosis or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Since the setting of the book is an asylum, I was able to create characters
based on some of the patients who I encountered while working as a nurse in
mental health.
Do you see writing as a career?
-I would love to see writing take me to places or heights
I’ve never known but for now, nursing is my career. I have a license to heal
and that’s where my heart is. I love helping my patients and bonding with them.
I love being creative and trying to inspire and entertain with writing and I do
love when I get positive reviews but nothing tops connecting with a human being
and changing their life physically, emotionally and sometimes spiritually. I
think this strong feeling toward nursing is influenced by my diagnosis of
Lupus. The challenges of daily headaches, pain and fatigue allow me to better
empathize with my patients.
Do you have any fears related to
what readers may think after reading The Asylum?
-My concern is that the flashbacks may go over the readers’
heads. I normally italicize my writing when I introduce a dream or flashback
but sometimes it’s overlooked and misunderstood.
Finally, what about The Asylum are you excited for readers to read? What will resonate with the
reader?
-I believe the twists will resonate with the readers just
like the major twist or jaw dropper at the end of my previous book, The
Reunion. My first book was full of clues and surprises and I think readers will
be astonished by the unravelling of events in The Asylum, especially with the
major twist at the very end. J
