As
soon as those three words came out of my mouth, the flow of cars and trucks
stopped dead. I mean it didn’t continue slowing down. No, it instantaneously
ceased moving and so did all sound.
There
was no movement anywhere except Lobo sitting there, looking at me and nodding
slowly. Not a leaf moved on any of the trees. Even the clouds seemed pinned to
the sky. Two crows no longer flew directly overhead. They stayed where they
were in mid-flap of their wings as if hung up there by strings. Tourists on the
sidewalks held whatever position they were in when I said, “Lottery Tickets
Inside.”
The
air around us felt heavy, syrupy like and very familiar.
“Well
done,” Lobo said, shattering the total silence as he got up from the bench.
His
voice filled the air all around us like a thunderclap. Even his footsteps, as
he walked the short distance over to the curb, sounded super loud.
After
surveying the inactivity on San Marco, Lobo continued talking almost as if
nothing had happened. “Frozen Time. It’s an interesting phenomena isn’t it? Not
that you haven’t seen it before.”
“This
is your doing too, just like the dragonflies,” I replied, startling myself with
my own voice. Thing is though, he was right. I had seen it before.
Turning
to me, he said, “When it happened to you the first time on the battlefield in
your ancestor’s dream world, you were astounded. And when it happened to you in
my truck once, you found it interesting. Now, it’s almost like an old friend,
isn’t it?”
A former award winning educator, Doug writes about things
paranormal and historical. His interest in the paranormal comes from personal
experiences as detailed in the nonfiction adult book he and wife wrote titled, An
Explosion of Being: An American Family's Journey into the Psychic. Out of those
events and extensive historical research, he then created Sliding Beneath
the Surface for young adults, Book I
of the St. Augustine Trilogy. Doug set his trilogy in the oldest and most
haunted city in the United States, St. Augustine, Florida.
