EXCERPT

On the dance floor, he twirls me around and dips me but doesn’t kiss me.

My brothers and sisters join us with their girlfriends and friends and we have a blast dancing.

“Okay, so I’ll be Jennifer Grey and you be Patrick Swayze,” I say to Tarago. “And you catch …”

“No, I want to be Jennifer Grey!” he says with a pout, his hands crossed over his chest. “You catch me.”

Everyone laughs.

I reach over and uncross his arms.

“Okay,” I say, taking a step back, “you gonna catch me?”

He bends his knees and leans forward, his arms outstretched, like a rugby player waiting outside a scrum.

I run up to him and jump into his arms. He lifts me high into the air, then slowly brings me down against him. Our lips are inches away from each other and suddenly it’s like Tarago and I are alone in the hall.

The music becomes muted and I feel like I’m under a giant wave that blocks out everyone except him.

The lights dim and the music has changed, but neither of us notice. I move into his arms, nestle into him and sway with him to Chris de Burgh’s Lady in Red.

I look up into his face. We both are no longer smiling.

“I love you, Tanin,” he says in a gruff voice.

“I love you, Tarago,” I say, feeling close to tears.

We’re so caught up in the moment, that we throw caution to the winds of the fair Cape and kiss.

Then we hold each other and sway to the rhythm.

We just confessed our love for each other – it’s a pivotal moment.

Eve Rabi lives in Sydney Australia, but was born in South Africa.
