Blurb:
The mysterious device in Prudence
Hastings’ basement could be the answer to her prayers, if she could just figure
out what it is. Needing William Foreman’s help, she’s prepared to do whatever
it takes to gain it. Even putting aside her dislike of machines and
volunteering to test the risqué apparatus he’s developing for the Acolytes of
Concupiscence.
Will’s expecting a lightskirt for a
test subject and is horrified when he realizes the tempting woman he just
debauched is very much a lady. But despite his best intentions, something keeps
drawing him back to her, and it isn’t just the thought of discovering the inner
workings of her uncle’s last invention. Unlocking their passion is turning out
to be a far more pleasurable, if dangerous, job.
Beset by desire, automatons,
secrets, an unintelligible maid and the danger of utter ruin should their
association become known, Will and Prudence haven’t a chance in hell of
remaining unscathed.
Fire up the boiler, open the
sluices and take cover. Something’s about to explode…

Excerpt Two:
“There
now, guv. No need to frighten the lady, barking at her like that.”
With
a startled gasp the woman swung toward the sound of Alexander’s voice, clutching
her long, beaded shawl so tightly Will was surprised it didn’t tear. The fox
rose from the cushion in the corner and stretched, the copper filaments
interspersed amongst the red-and-white fur glistening in the laboratory lights.
With a little bow to the doxy, he continued, “How do you do?”
Cursing
silently, Will turned back to the machine in front of him and picked up a
spanner. “She’s here to test the machines, Alexander, not have tea and scones.
There is no need for inane pleasantries.”
“I’m
well, thank you, and I don’t think pleasantries are ever silly.”
The
sound of her low, slightly husky tone tried to compel his attention, but Will
resisted the urge to look her way again. Instead he tightened his hand on the
tool and tried to focus on the engine.
“Me
neither.” The amusement in Alexander’s voice set Will’s teeth on edge. “Nothing
like a little courtesy to smooth things along.”
“Although,
you would admit this is not a typical social event?” Laughter colored her
voice, making it rich and dark as cocoa.
“No
reason for impatience, or rudeness.”
Will
gritted his teeth, trying to ignore the sting of Alexander’s words. Without
gracing them with even a look, he said, “Perhaps now that all social niceties
have been observed we can get on with it?”
Alexander
sighed and the woman chuckled softly in reply. Now thoroughly aggrieved, Will
tried to glare his displeasure at the pair. He might as well not have bothered,
as neither were paying him even the slightest attention. The fox was seated at
the doxy’s feet, staring up at her, while the woman looked down at him in
return. Because of their positions Will got his first real look at the test
subject’s face.
She
was rather plain—handsome in a pale, wide-eyed style—not the painted strumpet
he’d been expecting. Nondescript brown hair was pulled back into a simple bun,
with nary a ringlet or stiffly crimped wave in view. And although he was no
expert, Will didn’t think he’d ever seen a lightskirt wearing that kind of
enveloping black dress. It made her look as if she were in mourning, rather
than trying to entice men for immoral purposes. Yet the somber fabric made her
skin luminous, which in turn set off her dark-lashed eyes and made her full,
slightly smiling mouth seem exceptionally pink and lush.

is Alexander?
