The hero, geology professor Frank Miller, found an alien device in a cave in the Sierra Madre Oriental beneath the skeleton of an Aztec war chief. Little did he know that this device was given to the Mayans by aliens to protect the earth from self-destruction and that the Mayans had placed a powerful curse on anyone who dared to move it. In 2009 Miller’s curious grandson turned the knob in the center of the alien device causing geologic time to speed up. Geologic events that normally took millions of years to take place started taking place in a few months. In 2013 massive volcanic eruptions occurred at the Yellowstone Supervolcano and at Mount Shasta in California; huge earthquakes centered in the Gulf of California caused cracks to form in Hoover Dam; and a series of devastating earthquakes and tidal waves destroyed all cities east of the Appalachians. Using her gift of ESP Miller’s wife, Jane, was able to communicate with the alien device now called the “Apocalypse Calendar”. She received the warning that the Earth was in extreme danger. The aliens told Jane that Apocalypse Calendar should be returned to the cave in the Sierra Madre Oriental and its center knob turned to its original position. Only then would the Earth be saved. With the help of a local Nahuatl Indian curandero Miller managed to circumvent the powerful Mayan curse and successfully return the Apocalypse Calendar to the cave in an “Indian Jones”-like ending.
My Review:
I love reading about prophesies and how they started. I also love Indiana Jones and treasure hunting. I really enjoyed this book, and it was really interesting. I loved the maps and they helped me understand the locations better. However the author told his story as if he was talking to his peers and not plain readers like myself. I think he should have used words that are more well known, rather than big words that are hard to understand. I am giving this book a 3/5. I was given a copy to review, however all opinions are my own.
