Excerpt: Baby Patrick
Comes Home (a portion of Chapter 4)
Two days
later, little baby Patrick came home from the hospital, complete with all the
pomp and circumstance that accompanies the occasion: the nurses insisting on
bringing Alexandra downstairs in a wheelchair; David bringing the car around
and re-checking the car seat for the umpteenth time; Shelley sitting in the
front seat and Alexandra in the back next to Patrick, all of them undoubtedly
visualizing every lunatic on the road swerving out of control and hitting their
car.
Shelley smiled to herself as she
recalled a memory from nineteen years earlier when she took her first baby,
Rose, out for a walk in the stroller for the very first time. It was a crisp
autumn day, with skies impossibly blue, the temperature perfect for taking a
walk. She remembered guiding the stroller along the sidewalk and feeling so
proud: proud of the baby she’d created, proud of having figured out how to open
the stroller whose mechanics were so simple yet so difficult to figure out
those first few times; proud of the life she led as a mother, a wife, a
business owner, a home owner.
Blissful in her newfound
motherliness, and with the soreness of childbirth becoming more of a memory
than a current reality, she’d walked slowly, carefully, down the residential
street where she lived at the time. Birds were chirping and she could hear the
sounds of children playing, punctuated by the exuberant bark of a dog in a
nearby yard. Squirrels were scampering, animated as cartoon characters, leaping
from branch to branch, busily bringing their loot back to their nests to save
up for winter.
And that’s when it hit her: Squirrels were scampering. Jumping from branch to branch right above where they were walking! She
froze, aghast, staring at her vulnerable newborn who slept, blissfully unaware
that at any moment a rodent could fall right into her stroller.
She’d rationalized with herself, Stop being ridiculous! In your entire life,
have you ever seen a squirrel slip and fall? Of course not!
It didn’t matter. Suddenly the world
seemed filled with danger. Squirrels slipping, birds pooping, bumps in the
sidewalk upending the stroller and sending the baby flying onto the pavement
despite the five-point restraint that had her strapped in as if riding on an
upside-down roller coaster. It felt like a dangerous world, one in which she
could never keep her child safe. In which Shelley, at that moment, vastly
preferred to stay safely ensconced in their tidy little ranch home where the
most dangerous hazard would be their elderly dog walking by and wagging his
tail.
Riding along in the car, recalling
that day and looking around at all the “maniacs” on the road, Shelley felt her
lip curl upward with ironic mirth and turned around to see how Alexandra was
handling it.
She was flipping through a
magazine—the latest issue of Cosmo—undoubtedly
filled with advice for good fashion, good makeup, and good sex (just what a
seventeen-year-old girl needs). Shelley’s concern about how she’d gotten the
magazine was overridden by her surprise that Alexandra seemed entirely
unconcerned about taking her son for his first ride in a motorized vehicle. She
asked how she was doing.
“Fine. I can’t wait to get home and take a nap. The nurses brought him into my
room at like six o’clock in the
morning.” She rolled her eyes.

My Review:
I really liked this book. It reminded me of my mom. She always tries to do everything for everybody. We never had a white couch growing up! lol. We could spill and make a mess as much as we wanted to! I was the last kid to get married and move out. My parents had a sitting room! I did sleep over a few times, a bat situation, and there was always room! I get what Shelley was trying to do. Their house was free of kid stuff. The kids that lived at home still were in high school, and would rather be driven everywhere rather than making a mess. Being married I can not imagine how I would feel if I was Shelley. David. Some of the book he was a real son of a b*. I wanted to slap him. I can kind of see him being upset, but Alex was his blood, if anything Shelley should have been acting the way he was.
The kids were funny, and it reminded me of when I was younger and argued with my siblings. I giggled a few times! the plot was really good and it was such a good view on marriage, and family. I liked the end but wish that maybe the author went a year ahead and showed us how the family was doing. The kids really didn't have exciting endings. Then again I guess that is the point. They were a normal family with somewhat normal problems. I am giving this book a 5/5 and am going to be watching this author! I hope there is a sequel. Maybe Tiny can have puppies.
I am able to giveaway a paperback copy of Unexpecting! USA only! Please enter below! Good luck and don't forget to check out the author's page. There is so much you can win!
