Nora Bonesteel's Christmas Past by Sharyn McCrumb Review

When someone buys the old Honeycutt house, Nora Bonesteel is glad to see some life brought back to the old mansion, even if it is by summer people. But when they decide to stay through Christmas, they find more than old memories in the walls. On Christmas Eve, Sheriff Spencer Arrowood and Deputy Joe LeDonne find themselves on an unwelcome call to arrest an elderly man for a minor offense. As they attempt to do their duty, while doing the right thing for a neighbor, it begins to look like they may all spend Christmas away from home. In a story of spirits, memories, and angels unaware, Sharyn McCrumb revisits her most loved characters who know there is more to this world than the eye can see, especially at Christmastime. 160 pages

My Review:
This is the first book by this author that I have read. Even though it is not necessary to enjoy this book, I would love to read her other books. Especially the ones with the same characters. To read their history and why they have their certain idiosyncrasies would be fun. The idea of an old mansion hiding secrets is not new, however the way the author involved the police and the neighbors was. I also enjoyed the idea of the house getting "new" life in it, and then only for summer. The guests do not realize that their new home is more then just a home! Christmas is a special time and to have to spend it away from home is never fun. Their are always spirits at work, and maybe they are all together at Christmas for a reason. Maybe they need to make the past right before they can enjoy the present? I liked the end, and i can not wait to read more from this author. I am giving this book a 4/5. I was given a copy to review from Night Owl Reviews, and this review is their property. All opinions are my own.

Dead for a Spell by Raymond Buckland Review

Bram Stoker, business manager for London’s Lyceum Theatre, is never surprised to find the supernatural waiting in the wings. Especially when a chilling murder appears to have origins in the occult, March 1881. The Lyceum is abuzz with the news that American actor Edwin Booth is going to be sharing the stage with their own Shakespearean star, Henry Irving. But stage manager Harry Rivers has other matters preoccupying him. One of the regular actresses has disappeared, and after a disturbing tarot card reading, Harry’s boss, Bram Stoker, is convinced that something wicked is coming their way. When the poor girl’s body is found, Stoker’s suspicions prove to be founded. The murder scene is riddled with strange clues that Stoker recognizes as the trappings of an occult ritual. Someone is conjuring up a pernicious plot against cast and crew of the Lyceum, and if Harry doesn’t track down the slaying sorcerer quickly, it could spell disaster for those he holds dearest.

My Review:
This book was a different take on the Bram Stroker that I know from the past. I am a fan of Victorian romances, and this book was set in the same era, 1881. There was the buzz of London, the theater goers, and a dead body. This is part of  a great series called "A Bram Stroker Mystery" series. . I liked the storyline and I think that the characters are great. The novel is interesting and held my attention watching the clues. I give this book a 4/5.  I was given this book for the purpose of  a review and all opinionsa re my own.

Bless Her Dead Little Heart by Miranda James Review

The new series from the author of The Silence of the Library and Murder Past Due... New York Times bestselling author Miranda James returns to Athena, Mississippi, with an all-new mystery featuring Miss An’gel and Miss Dickce Ducote, two snoopy sisters who are always ready to lend a helping hand. But when a stressed socialite brings murder right to their doorstep, even they have trouble maintaining their Southern hospitality? With the Mississippi sun beating down, An’gel and Dickce are taking a break to cool off and pet sit their friend Charlie Harris’s cat, Diesel, when their former sorority sister, Rosabelle Sultan, shows up at their door unexpectedly, with her ne’er-do-well adult children not far behind. Rosabelle’s selfish offspring are desperate to discover what’s in her will, and it soon becomes clear that one of them would kill to get their hands on the inheritance. Suddenly caught up in a deadly tangle of duplicitous suspects and deep-fried motives, it will take all of the sisters’ Southern charm to catch a decidedly ill-mannered killer

My Review:
This was a good book because as the bodies started to pile up, more questions arose. It was interesting that someone would want to kill their own family member, especially immediate family. That is the what the author is trying to get across, What would people do for money?  They would obviously lie, cheat and kill anyone that is in their way. As family members started to show up the list of suspects got bigger, however Dickce and An'gel do not mind the company. Their house is full of southern hospitality, and even their housekeeper is okay with the company. I liked that the murders were not the usual murder weapons. Spiders and wet floors made the lists of suspects even longer for me. Anyone can spill water. I was guessing until the end. This is only the first book in the series, however I have a feeling that these sisters have a lot more mysteries to solve. I am giving this book a 5/5. I was given a copy to review from Night Owl Reviews, and this review is their property. However all opinions are my own.

Trick or Deadly Treat by Livia J. Washburn Review

It’s Halloween in Weatherford, Texas which means Phyllis Newsom is baking up a storm of yummy seasonal treats...but she’s about to get even busier unmasking a killer. While Phyllis and her friend Carolyn are preparing for a baking contest, her housemate Sam adopts Buck, an adorable Dalmatian who was hit by a car. But when they arrive at the clinic, the vet is in the process of being arrested for the murder of his wife! Convinced that the police are barking up the wrong tree and that someone’s been burying evidence, Sam begs Phyllis to help find the real killer. Joined by Buck, the friends engage in a dogged pursuit of the murderer, who will stop at nothing to muzzle them permanently. Includes Recipes

My Review:
I love reading a story about an owner and their pets. Especially when a murder mystery is involved, This was like an adult version of Scooby Doo. This was a very easy read and I loved reading all the recipes as well. The mystery was interesting, and why did someone want to kill Hank's wife? Not only that but why did someone want to frame Hank? There are also missing drugs, Halloween parties and a lot of ear scratching. I also liked the excerpt for "The Fatal Funnel Cake". The end was good, and I thought that it fit the rest of the plot very well. I am giving this book a 4/5. I was given a copy to review from Night Owl Reviews, however all opinions are my own.

Then Hamlet disappears?only to be found next a dead man's body. Now it’s up to Darla and Hamlet to take best in show and collar the killer

My Review:
This was a really nice book for cat lovers. Not only was there a cat show, kittens that needed homes but also a mystery that needed to be solved. My favorite part was the end! I can not say why, but I loved it! There was also a very interesting memorial service where a fight broke out, It made me wonder about the killer and the victim. The cat show outcome was interesting and I looked up pictures of this breed. I loved Hamlet and he was my favorite character. I liked that Darla sold mysteries and solved them. However I am not sure that she was ready for her cat to be so close to the victim. I am giving this book a 4/5. I was given a copy to review from Night Owl reviews, however all opinions are my own.

One Potion in the Grave by Heather Blake Review

From the author of the Wishcraft Mysteries Carly Bell Hartwell’s love potions are always in demand in Hitching Post, Alabama, the wedding capital of the South.? When Katie Sue Perrywinkle walks into the Little Shop of Potions, Carly is surprised and delighted to see her old childhood friend. Katie Sue fled her hometown and a troubled family over a decade ago. But she’s not back for a social visit. She’s come to settle a score with Senator Warren Calhoun, who is in town for his son’s high-profile wedding. But before Katie Sue has a chance to voice any objections, she’s forced to forever hold her peace. After finding her friend dead, Carly vows to find her murderer. Were the corrupt Calhouns willing to go to any lengths to avoid a scandal? Did Katie Sue’s family take the term bad blood” to a whole new level? And why did the bride-to-be come to Carly for a love potion? As Carly gets closer to the truth, a killer is planning a very chilly reception.

My Review:
This is a great paranormal mystery. I did not know who the killer was and people kept showing up with blood on them. The high profile wedding was interesting, and I wondered how far the family of the groom would go to keep the wedding on track. Especially when someone wants to object, but they are silenced. There were great descriptive words in this book, like peacockiness and witchy senses! I also liked all the different potion possibilities (hair loss, love etc.). The most interesting part was that all this drama started because of someone born on the wrong side of the tracks. If only people would accept who their family members choose to love, then no one would have died. I still am a bit confused, because on page 292 out of 316 someone gets poisoned again. This made me rethink the previous 291 pages! It really had me guessing until the end, and then the end was a cliffhanger... This is the second book in a series and I can not wait to read books one and three. I am giving this book a 4/5. I was given a copy to review from Night Owl Reviews, however all opinions are my own.

The Legend of Sleepy Harlow by Kylie Logan Book Review

It takes more than a lurid legend to scare off the League of Literary Ladies? For Halloween, the Literary Ladies have chosen to read Washington Irving’s spooky classic, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, with its infamous headless horseman. But South Bass Island has its own headless legend?of a Prohibition bootlegger named Charlie ?Sleepy” Harlow. Decapitated by rival rumrunners, Harlow appears once a year in spectral form to search for his noggin. This October, the Elkhart Ghost Getters (EGG) have returned to the island. The group claims that they have film footage of Harlow’s ghost, and are determined to get more. They’re staying at Bea Cartwright’s B and B, but it’s Kate Wilder who isn’t happy to see them after they trashed her winery last year. When the EGG leader turns up dead, Kate becomes the prime suspect, and the other League members need to scramble to crack the case.

My review;

I just finished reading The Legend of Sleepy Harlow and I really liked it. The storyline is great and I really liked the characters. It's Halloween and The League of Literary Ladies have been reading, " The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", by Washington Irving. Added to this is the South Bass Island legend of another headless ghost. What are they going to do when Kate Wilder is still mad after last year because her winery was wrecked. So when someone turns up dead who had a part in this all think that it is Kate's doing. The hunt is on to figure solve the case. I have never read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and I would love to read it with these characters. The town legend was also an interesting twist to the book "group".  I give this book a 4/5. I was given this book for the purpose of a review and all opinions are my own.

My review;

This is another mystery in this series called Orchard Mysteries  by Sheila Connolly. I really like this series and their storylines. They have to solve these mysteries fast so that they can get on with their plans. The characters are very likable.  The recipes are great, too. Rogue Spy by Joanna Bourne Review

For years he’d lived a lie. It was time to tell the truth . . . even if it cost him the woman he loved. Ten years ago he was a boy, given the name Thomas Paxton and sent by Revolutionary France to infiltrate the British Intelligence Service. Now his sense of honor brings him back to London, alone and unarmed, to confess. But instead of facing the gallows, he’s given one last impossible assignment to prove his loyalty. Lovely, lying, former French spy Camille Leyland is dragged from her safe rural obscurity by threats and blackmail. Dusting off her spy skills, she sets out to track down a ruthless French fanatic and rescue the innocent victim he’s holding only to find an old colleague already on the case. Pax. Old friendship turns to new love, and as Pax and Camille’s dark secrets loom up from the past, Pax is left with a choice go rogue from the Service or lose Camille forever

My Review:
I really liked this cover. I immediately thought of The Pimpernel, and London. Like most stories there is a romance, and the characters do not realize how much is at stake. However this story is different. The couple knew each other as friends, and they are both now involved in government. Camille is a spy and Pax is a "soldier". The two are like oil and water, however these characters want to follow their hearts and be together. Towards the end of the book we realize what is really important to them. There are other characters at work trying to destroy Pax and Camille, and their love. I have read other books by this author and I will in the future. I am giving this book a 4/5. I was given a copy to review from Night Owl Reviews, however all opinions are my own.

An American Duchess by Sharon Page Review

At the height of the Roaring Twenties, New York heiress Zoe Gifford longs for the freedoms promised by the Jazz Age. Headstrong and brazen, but bound by her father's will to marry before she can access his fortune, Zoe arranges for a brief marriage to Sebastian Hazelton, whose aristocratic British family sorely needs a benefactor.  Once in England, her foolproof plan to wed, inherit and divorce proves more complicated than Zoe had anticipated. Nigel Hazelton, Duke of Langford and Sebastian's austere older brother, is disgraced by the arrangement and looks down upon the raucous young American who has taken up residence at crumbling Brideswell Abbey. Still reeling from the Great War, Nigel is now staging a one-man battle against a rapidly changing world—and the outspoken Zoe represents everything he's fighting against. When circumstances compel Zoe to marry Nigel rather than Sebastian, she does so for love, he for honor. But with Nigel unwilling to change with the times, Zoe may be forced to choose between her husband and her dreams.

My Review:
This was a fun love story and it reminded me of a BBC sitcom. It could have been shorter, or the climax should have come later in the book. I did like the characters and I really wanted Zoe to live her dreams and to marry the man she loves. This is not a historical fiction book, and once I stopped looking for historical accuracy I enjoyed the book more. I am giving this book a 3/5. I was given a copy to review, however all opinions are my own.

Death of a Chocoholic by Lee Hollis Book Review

Fed up with dating after a disastrous setup, the only thing Hayley wants to snuggle up to is a box of made-to-order chocolates from plus-sized, plus-mouthed chocolatier Bessie Winthrop. But when Bessie is found dead in her kitchen, only Hayley suspects that Bessie's "heart attack" might actually be a candy-coated murder. Turns out Bessie had more enemies than a boxful of chocolates, each one a suspicious flavour. It's sticky business juggling a job, two teenagers and finding a killer, but it's better than letting a killer find Hayley first...

My review:

Hayley is a cocktails and food columnist. When she fails again at love she decides that she is craving chocolates. What she really wants a box from Bessie Winthrop, but she has just been found dead. While a heart attack is suspected to be the cause of death she thinks it is more than that. She is then surprised to learn that Bessie had a good amount of enemies. I give this book a 4/5. I was given this book for the purpose of a review and all opinions are my own.
