1. What made you write a book about a psychiatrist and a patient with multiple personalities?
I have always been fascinated by the difference between
what people show the world and what may be happening beneath the surface.
Psychiatry seemed like the perfect setting for exploring that idea because
every conversation can contain several layers: what the patient says, what the
psychiatrist hears, and what both of them may be avoiding.
In ALTERED, psychiatrist Justin Wright begins
treating Frank Devlin, a young man struggling with distinct alternate
personalities. What interested me was not simply the condition itself, but the
relationship that develops between them. Justin wants to help Frank, yet
compassion can make even an experienced psychiatrist vulnerable. The closer
Justin gets to understanding his patient, the more danger enters his own life.
I wanted the story to ask how well we can ever truly know
another person—and whether understanding someone necessarily means we are safe
from them.
2. How did you research the psychological elements of the
book?
I researched dissociative identity disorder, trauma,
psychiatric treatment, and the relationship between therapists and patients. I
read clinical material as well as personal accounts because I wanted to
understand both the medical perspective and the human experience.
At the same time, ALTERED is a psychological
thriller, not a textbook. My goal was to build believable characters and
emotional conflicts rather than overload readers with clinical terminology.
Research gave me the foundation, but the story depended on imagining how Justin
would react when a professional challenge became deeply personal.
The research also helped me recognize that people cannot
be reduced to a diagnosis. Frank needed to feel like a person
first—complicated, intelligent, frightened, manipulative, vulnerable, and
sometimes dangerous.
3. Which character was the hardest to write? Which was
the easiest?
Frank was probably the hardest because he could not feel
like a single, predictable character. His alternate personalities needed their
own voices, motivations, and emotional rhythms, while still belonging to the
same person. I had to know who was speaking, what that personality understood,
and what might be hidden from the others.
Justin was the easiest—not because his situation was
simple, but because I understood his instincts. He is caring, loyal, and
genuinely wants to help people. He often sees the best in others, even when readers
may be yelling at him to become a little more suspicious.
Of course, if Justin made every safe and sensible
decision, ALTERED would be a very short book.
4. There are many psychological thrillers about troubled
patients and dangerous secrets. What makes ALTERED different?
For me, the difference is that ALTERED is not only
about uncovering a mystery. It is about the emotional consequences of becoming
involved in another person’s fractured life.
The danger does not remain inside Justin’s office. It spreads
into his marriage, his family, and the parts of his life he believes are
protected. The suspense comes not only from asking what Frank or his alters
might do, but from watching Justin’s compassion affect his judgment.
The novel also became the beginning of a larger family
saga. The Justin Wright Suspense Series continues to explore how trauma,
secrets, loyalty, and revenge can reverberate for years. The threats change,
but the emotional consequences remain.
5. Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
Usually from questions rather than events.
What if the person you were trying to save became a
threat to everyone you loved? What if someone you trusted had an entire life
you knew nothing about? What if a seemingly compassionate choice created consequences
that could not be undone?
Once I find a question that unsettles me, I begin
creating characters who will be forced to answer it. Then I add secrets,
damaged relationships, conflicting loyalties, and at least one decision that
looks reasonable at the time and disastrous several chapters later.
Everyday emotions provide most of the inspiration. Fear,
jealousy, grief, guilt, resentment, and love are familiar to everyone.
Psychological suspense begins when those emotions are pushed far beyond the limits
of an ordinary day.
6. If you could put yourself into ALTERED as one
of the characters, who would you be?
I would choose Justin Wright, although that answer is
probably more aspirational than accurate.
Justin is a genuinely good and caring man. He listens to
people, tries not to judge them, and believes that even deeply troubled
individuals deserve help. He is devoted to his family and takes his
responsibilities seriously. He is the kind of person I would like to be.
Unfortunately, those same qualities sometimes place him
in danger. His compassion can override his caution, and his desire to help can
make it difficult for him to step back when he should.
I would like to think I would have Justin’s kindness. I
would also like to think I would change the locks sooner.
7. Do you ever get writer’s block? What helps you
overcome it?
Yes, although I usually find that writer’s block means
something in the story is not working. Perhaps a character is acting only
because the plot requires it, or a scene lacks emotional tension. Staring at
the same paragraph for another hour rarely solves the problem.
What helps is asking what the character wants, what is
preventing him from getting it, and what decision would make the situation
worse. That final question is particularly useful when writing suspense.
I may also step away from the computer, take a walk, or
do something completely unrelated. The solution often appears when I am not
actively chasing it—usually when I have no convenient way to write it down.
ALTERED begins the
Justin Wright Suspense Series, and the later novels expand the conflicts,
relationships, and consequences introduced in the first book. Each story raises
the stakes for Justin and his family, and readers frequently tell me they
cannot put the books down. I am always pleased to hear that—although I
occasionally feel I should apologize for the lost sleep.
