THE LEDGER
by Steven Manchester
June 8 - July 3, 2026 Virtual Book Tour
Synopsis:

Set in a medium-security penitentiary in the mid-1990s, The Ledger is a faith-based story that pulls back the curtain on prison life, allowing the reader a safe peek behind the wall.
Although told from three alternating perspectives—officer, inmate, and sergeant—many of the same questions are asked: Can light be found in the deepest darkness? What about forgiveness, redemption, and grace? And if the code is clear, “loyalty above all things except honor,” when should an officer cross the blue line to police one of his own?
The Ledger is the long-awaited companion novel to The Menu.

Aunt Interview
- When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
My grandfather was an amazing
storyteller. He planted the seed in me… I knew early that I wanted to be a
storyteller, too.
- How long does it take you to write a book?
The average book takes me 9-12
months to write (one my research is complete). In the end, it takes as long as
it needs to take.
- What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I write with either music or a movie
playing in the background. It forces me to become laser focused.
- When did you write your first book and how old were you?
I wrote my first book under a pen
name, Steven Herberts. It took me nearly three years and it wasn’t very good…
but it was a start. I was 25 years old.
- What do you like to do when you're not writing?
Read, exercise, travel… but
especially spend time with my family.
- What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
That there is so much truth that
bleeds through in fiction.
- How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
I’ve written 32 books. Although this
is a difficult question to answer, my top three favorite titles are The
Menu, The Rockin’ Chair, and Ashes. I will admit that The Ledger is
right there with them!
- Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they?
Become a
voracious reader; be honest about your writing weaknesses and work on them; and
it’s all about seat time. Practice, practice, practice…
9. 9. Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
I do… and I
love hearing from my readers. Although I appreciate the praise, I love when the
feedback is more in depth… creating dialogue between us.
- What do you think makes a good story?
I think good writing makes readers
think… but great writing makes readers feel. I always aim for the heart!
- What would you like my readers to know
There are so many reading options
out there. I really appreciate it when a new reader gives me a chance and then
becomes a reader for life. Give me a chance…
