When murder is served at a Scottish Burns supper, it’s not the haggis that hides the deadliest secret. Can an amateur sleuth catch the killer before they toast another victim?

Antiques expert, Dotty Sayers, is thrilled to return to the Cotswolds to reconnect with old friends and run the auction house where her career began. She and her friend, Sergeant Keya Varma, organise a traditional Burns Night celebration, but things go awry when one of their guests meets his end before the first whisky is poured.

When the new police inspector is pushed aside by headquarters before she can crack the case, Dotty can’t resist following her own leads. As she digs deeper, she uncovers the victim's tangled relationships, jealous spouses, and shady business dealings. But when a sensational newspaper article exposes the case, it threatens not only the investigation but also the auction house which Dotty has just been trusted to manage.

Can Dotty solve the case, or will the truth be drowned out by the skirl of the bagpipes?

 CHARACTER INTERVIEW

1) Are they introverted or extroverted?

Dotty Sayers, the protagonist of my series, is a thirty-one-year-old who initially comes across as shy, reserved, and more comfortable keeping to herself. When we meet her in the early books of the Dotty Sayers Antique Mystery series, she’s an introvert, often unsure of her place in the world. However, as the series progresses—particularly with Tartan, Treasures and Trouble being the twelfth instalment—Dotty has become more confident and comfortable in her own skin. Her journey has been one of growth, not just in her profession as an antiques expert, but also in her personal life. While she’s still the quiet, thoughtful type,  Dotty has learned to step out of her shell and face challenges head-on, even if it means working alongside others or embracing new opportunities. Character development is a big part of why she resonates with readers; she’s relatable in her imperfections, her quiet strength, her hard work ethic, and her often-overlooked intelligence.

2. Are they more optimistic or pessimistic?

Dotty is quietly optimistic. While she may not always express it outwardly, Dotty has an underlying belief that things will improve, even when facing challenges. Over time, her journey has shown her that solutions are often found when you keep moving forward, even when the way ahead isn’t clear. She’s learned not to let setbacks define her, and although she’s cautious, she always hopes for the best outcome, whether in her personal life or in the investigations she tackles. This optimism is often tempered by her realistic nature, but at her core, Dotty tends to look at the world with hope, even when it seems uncertain.

3. Do they ever put on airs?

Dotty doesn’t put on airs. She's humble and tends to feel awkward when others try to make a big deal out of her accomplishments. She's more focused on helping others than drawing attention to herself.

4. What bad habits do they have?

Dotty’s main bad habit is procrastination. She often overthinks situations, which can lead to delays in making decisions. She also tends to avoid confrontation, even when it's necessary.

5. What makes them laugh out loud?

Dotty has a dry sense of humour and finds amusement in absurd situations. She enjoys a good pun or a witty remark. She also laughs at the silly things her fluffy British Blue cat, Earl Grey, does.

6. How do they display affection?

Dotty isn’t overly demonstrative, but she shows affection through small gestures. She might give a comforting touch on the shoulder or make a thoughtful gesture like bringing someone their favourite treat or a small gift.

7. If they could change one thing about themselves, what would it be?

Dotty would like to be more decisive and assertive. She often wishes she could be quicker to speak her mind or make bold choices without second-guessing herself.

8. What is their obsession?

Dotty’s obsession is antiques. She has a deep appreciation for the history and craftsmanship behind them, and she’s dedicated to learning as much as she can about the antique world.

9. What are their pet peeves?

Dotty dislikes rudeness, inconsiderate behavior, and disorganization. She values politeness and thoughtfulness and can get frustrated when things are chaotic or when others are disrespectful.

10. What are their idiosyncrasies?

Dotty has a habit of talking to her cat, Earl Grey, as a way to process her thoughts. She also likes to organize things in an orderly fashion, and she has a tendency to over-prepare for events or projects.
