Interview:

1.    What literary pilgrimages have you gone on?

I haven’t gone on any formal literary pilgrimages, but I do feel that every trip or place I visit offers inspiration for my writing. Whether it’s the landscape, the people, or just the atmosphere of a place, I’m always on the lookout for details to incorporate into my books. As my stories often blend fantasy with real-world elements, travel naturally fuels my imagination.

2.    What is the first book that made you cry?

Besides the French books I had to read for class in school?  😉 It was Green City in the Sun by Barbara Wood. Set in Kenya in 1919, this book follows a British family who settle on Kikuyu homeland, leading to antagonism with the local tribe. The forbidden love between a British woman and a Kenyan man, and the tragic end of one of them, left me in tears. I cried my eyes out reading that story.

3.    Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Both. Mostly, it energizes me. Writing allows me to pour out my thoughts and feelings, which can be incredibly cathartic. Even when I’m writing about sadness, once it’s on the page, I feel lighter, like I’ve left those feelings behind. On the flip side, there are days when every sentence is a struggle. On those days, I step back and let myself take a break, knowing I’ll return to it with fresh energy another time.

4.    What is your writing kryptonite?

Noise! I need a quiet space to really focus and gather my thoughts. Silence allows me to dive deeper into the world I'm creating without distractions.

5.    Did you ever consider writing under a pseudonym?

Yes, I actually do use a pseudonym. I have a full-time day job as a scientist and prefer to keep my professional and writing lives separate. It also gives me the freedom to explore different genres without any preconceptions.

6.    What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?

I have a few author friends, and we regularly exchange ideas and experiences. We read each other's books, provide feedback, and support one another in marketing efforts. This collaboration is invaluable because it gives me fresh perspectives and ideas on how to improve my craft.

7.    Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

The War of the Nephilim series, starting with The Nephilim’s Fate, is a four-book series. The first three books each focus on a different couple, while the fourth book brings them all together to save the world. Each of the first three books can technically be read as a standalone, but the experience is far richer when read as a complete series since the overarching storyline is interwoven throughout all the books.

8.    What authors did you dislike at first but grew into?

I can’t really think of one. I typically read for pleasure, and if a book doesn’t resonate with me, I tend to put it down and move on. Life’s too short to read books that don’t grab you!

9.    What’s your favorite under-appreciated novel?

Besides my books? 😉 One that comes to mind is A darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab. I’ve been reading her work for about 10-15 years, and it was surprising that it took so long for her to gain the widespread recognition she deserves. Her books are brilliant.

10. As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

I would choose a turtle. I’ve always loved them, and there’s something about their steady, determined pace that resonates with me. Plus, they carry their home on their backs—kind of like how I carry my stories with me wherever I go!

11. How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

I have about five to ten book ideas waiting for their turn, along with an almost-finished time-travel romance that I’m planning to publish in early 2025.

12. What did you edit out of this book?

Oddly enough, I didn’t really edit anything out. As The Nephilim's Fate was my first book, I actually ended up adding scenes to build more conflict and depth, rather than cutting things out.

13. If you didn’t write, what would you do for work?

Since I’m already a scientist full-time, I’d likely continue in that field. However, if I could do absolutely anything, I’d probably live on a warm island and rescue turtles, helping them recover from injuries. It’s a bit of a dream of mine!

14. Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?

Yes! I’ve woven some personal experiences into my stories, and only those who know me well will catch those little easter eggs. It’s my way of adding a layer of personal connection to the narrative.

15. What is your favorite childhood book?

It’s hard to name just one. I read voraciously as a child, and while there wasn’t a single standout, I’ve always gravitated toward fantasy. Though I dipped into thrillers and horror for a bit, I always came back to fantasy romance—it’s where my heart truly lies.
