Interview
Where are you from?
I’m from about an hour outside of Vancouver, Canada. I’ve lived here my whole life and love it!
Tell us your latest
news?
Murder in the Hidden Cargo Hold, the first book in the Olivia Ocean Cruise Ship Mysteries is out this week!
When and why did you begin writing?
I began writing a little more than twenty years ago when I was pregnant with my son. It must have been “pregnant brain” because I’d never had much desire to write before that.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I met a critique
partner of mine on a website called Critique Circle. She convinced me to pursue
publication and that was when I first considered that other people may enjoy
reading my stories as much as I enjoyed writing them.
What inspired you to write your first book?
My first book was a young adult mystery. I was reminiscing about my own teen years, where my best friend had been killed in a car accident and all the confusion that had surrounded me about someone dying so young. That was the main inspiration for my first book, even though I didn’t know it would be a mystery when I first began writing it.
Do you have a specific writing style?
Many of my readers tell me that my characters feel like friends. I think I have a very casual, friendly writing style and most of my books are more character driven than plot-heavy, although I do work very hard on creating a compelling plot as well.
How did you come up with the title?
When I came up with the idea of a mystery series set on a cruise ship, I thought about all the locations I wanted to explore aboard a ship. The first, most intriguing location I could think of was the hidden corridors that were not open to the general public. Thus, Murder in the Hidden Cargo Hold was born!
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
I don’t think of it as a message so much as a theme. Most of my books have a theme of finding a place to belong, and that there is a place for everyone to belong.
What would you like my readers to know?
Murder in the Hidden Cargo hold is a light, fun mystery with the most adorable kitten you’ll ever find. I hope you’ll check it out!
Thanks so much for inviting me!
