1. When did you first
realize you wanted to be a writer?
I’ve always written (since I could write!), so I’ve always
been a writer, if that makes sense. It’s like breathing.
2. How long does it
take you to write a book?
I know this is a terrible answer but it depends. This book,
Snowbound With The Pack, took about a month, but it’s a
novella, so that’s not typical.
3. What is your work
schedule like when you're writing?
I squeeze writing in wherever I can. I write in short
fifteen minute sprints, for example, at lunchtime or while I’m waiting
somewhere. It has to be that way because I have an intense day job, a family,
and a farm!
4. What would you say
is your interesting writing quirk?
I really like to subvert classic plots and love to surprise
the reader. Sometimes I surprise myself with a plot twist, and have to write
myself out of a corner.
5. How do books get
published?
The Cursed Pack series is indie published, so I write and
edit it, get it professionally edited, commission a cover, format it, upload
it, and away we go!
6. Where do you get
your information or ideas for your books?
Ideas tend to bounce into my head at the oddest times, like
when I’m driving or half-asleep. I’m an information addict, so I’m interested
in everything, and sometimes ideas just gel together out of various sources. I
am so thankful for the internet.
7. When did you write
your first book and how old were you?
I was four! It was called “Vater the Villain” and it was
about a spy, who was one of the bad guys. It also starred his cousin, named,
appropriately, Cousin. I like to say it was a graphic novel—it was mostly
pictures, but their adventures filled an entire notebook.
8. What do you like to
do when you're not writing?
Spend time with family, ride our horses, play with our dogs,
read, travel…and sometimes sleep when I can fit it in.
9. What does your
family think of your writing?
They’re always excited to see new books come out!
10. What was one of the
most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
That writing for publication is harder than writing to
please yourself!
11. How many books
have you written? Which is your favorite?
I have three published fiction books so far, and two
technical books. I also have a whole drawer full of manuscripts that will
probably never see the light of day. I think Talent To Burn, which was my first published novel, will always
have a special place in my heart because it was the first.
12. Do you have any
suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they?
Read widely, across many genres. Find a good critique
partner. And write as often as you can. Practice makes perfect, or something.
13. Do you hear from
your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
On this series, they mostly ask me when Gaelan is going to
get his own book. That’s actually the next one in the series, and I’m writing
it now.
14. Do you like to
create books for adults?
Yes
15. What do you think
makes a good story?
Interesting characters, novel worldbuilding, and a twisty
plot.
16. As a child, what
did you want to do when you grew up?
It varied a lot, but included being a writer, a
veterinarian, or a journalist, depending on what I was obsessed with at the
time.
17. What would you
like my readers to know?
I loved writing Snowbound With The Pack, and I hope you
enjoy it!
