Grandparents naturally want to give their grandchildren something special. It is easy to believe that special means expensive. After more than twenty years of Grandpa Days with my six grandchildren, I have learned that the gifts they remember most rarely come from a store.
What children value is your undivided attention. A walk through the neighborhood, a visit to the library, pancakes made together, or an afternoon looking through old family photographs can become a lasting memory when a grandparent is fully present.
One of my grandson Felix's favorite activities began with an inexpensive coloring book. During brunch, I noticed that he was especially interested in pictures of houses and buildings. I started keeping a canvas bag in my car filled with architectural coloring books, markers, colored pencils, and pens. That simple bag gave us something to look forward to whenever we were together. It also opened conversations about architecture, engineering, and his love of math.
The real value was not in the supplies. It was in noticing what interested him and making room for us to explore it together.
A meaningful grandparent experience does not require an admission ticket or an elaborate plan. Start with what is already available. Visit a park. Bake a family recipe.
