Interview

 1.      What literary pilgrimages have you gone on?

Well, I’ve been on a lot of pilgrimages all over the world, but I’ve never specifically set out on a literary pilgrimage. My husband is from Northern Ireland, and the McGloughlin clan are inspired by my in-laws, a big, boisterous family full of huge personalities.

 2.      What is the first book that made you cry?

Where the Red Fern Grows. Old Yeller. Lad, A Dog. Animals getting hurt always makes me cry.

 3.      Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Both. When I’m under deadline, I’m usually exhausted – but there is nothing like getting immersed in a story you are writing where you feel like you’re in the middle of the narrative.

 4.      What is your writing Kryptonite?

Real life, lol. No, seriously, I have such a busy life it sometimes knocks me off my wordcount.

5.      Did you ever consider writing under a pseudonym?

Why yes, and I do!

6.      What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?

Writer friends are one of the best parts of this business. I’ve met nearly every single one of my writing heroes. I tend to love Indy writers because they’re not subject to “formulas” that big publishers require traditional writers to follow. It allows for so much more creativity. You know, I’m friends with so many writers now it feels impossible to list them. I am very excited that a lot of my friends are contributing to an anthology coming out in Jan 2025 called Hope & Harmony.

 7.      Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

Definitely a body of work. All of my books (with the exception of the Less Than Zero encores) are interconnected standalones. Characters pop up in other books all the time. It’s how I like to read and how I like to write.

 8.      What authors did you dislike at first but grew into?

You know, I am a big fan of diversity and the only thing that bugs me is if it’s really apparent that a writer hasn’t used an editor or proofreader. Or, they haven’t researched their subject matter and have glaring errors.

9.      What’s your favorite under-appreciated novel?

This will sound weird because I’m a romance author, but I love Stephen King. The book “It” nearly killed me (before it was a movie and TV series) – clowns and giant spiders. ARGH?

Romance novel wise, I love anything by Carian Cole. Really edgy. Super smart. Very tortured heroes. Beautiful writing.

One of my favorite thick novels is Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. Compelling story about building a cathedral that spans generations. Sounds boring, right? It’s not.

 10.  As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

Easy. A wolf.

11.  How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

I just turned in the next book in the Charming Irish series to my editor. I have to write a novella by end of year and get a huge jump on Book 3 of the Charming Irish.

12.  What did you edit out of this book?

I edit a lot out. I write and rewrite the prologue about a million times as the book unfolds.

If anything, I probably edit out anything that doesn’t push the story forward.

13.  If you didn’t write, what would you do for work?

Well, I’m not a FT writer. I own my own business and work on that full time as well.

14.  Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?

All the time.

15.  What is your favorite childhood book?

See above, Lad, a Dog. Old Yeller. Where the Red Fern Grows. Oh, and all of the Little House on the Prairie books.
