Happy Book Birthday, Jenny!

David and Charlotte paid their dues. They traveled to another realm, battled the Dragon King, recovered the all important magic key to the mage tunnels, and found the heir to the throne of Hirth, as promised. Now it's time to go home. There’s just one problem: the powerful crystals needed to activate the tunnels have been stolen…and David’s parents have mysteriously disappeared along with them. Guess who’s not going home to Havendale anytime soon.
Eric Hamden, squire extraordinaire, survived the poisonous knick of a shadowmorth’s blade, rescued the king of Hirth from the bowels of the dragon's lair, and confronted a heartbreaking betrayal that nearly got him killed. Still reeling from the news, Eric sets his sights on a daring rescue only to wind up in a prison of his own with David and Charlotte at his side. But rescues come in strange ways, and before they know it, the three end up in David's hometown of Havendale...and Eric gets a quick schooling in Modern Life 101. He'd rather fight a dragon.
With secrets, lies and betrayals meeting them at every turn, David, Charlotte and Eric soon discover that Havendale isn't the sanctuary they'd hoped for. Even their best-laid plans can't prepare them for the danger that stalks them. This time, no amount of magic or prayers can save them. War has been declared, and in the final battle, someone must make the ultimate sacrifice. Let the battle begin.

OTHER BOOKS IN THE SERIES

  J. (Jenny) Keller Ford is a scribbler of speculative fiction and YA tales. As an Army brat, she traveled the world and wandered the halls of some of Germany’s most extraordinary castles in hopes of finding snarky dragons, chivalrous knights, and wondrous magic to permeate her imagination. What she found remains etched in her topsy-turvy mind and oozes out in sweeping tales of courage, sacrifice, honor and everlasting love. When not torturing her keyboard or trying to silence the voices in her head, Jenny spends time collecting seashells, bowling, screaming on roller coasters and traveling. She is a mom to four magnificent and noble offspring and currently lives in paradise on the west coast of Florida with a menagerie of royal pets, and her own quirky knight who was brave enough to marry her. Published works include The Passing of Millie Hudson, a paranormal short story that can be found in READING GLASSES. IN THE SHADOW OF THE DRAGON KING is her debut novel and the first installment in the Chronicles of Fallhollow Trilogy. Book 2 in the series is slated for Fall 2016.

Interview:

  1. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I’ve known I wanted to be a writer ever since I was old enough to hold a crayon, or so it seems. My mom always said I had an incredible imagination. Sometimes it got me in trouble, but that’s a different story for a different day.
  1. How long does it take you to write a book?
It really depends. The first book in the series took a really long time as I didn’t devote myself to it 100% at a time. The second book, RAGE OF THE DRAGON KING, took about 8-10 months, with another 1-2 months editing with comments from beta readers. I have written a book in 45 days. It will never see the light of day unless I want to spend a lot of time revising, but I can say I wrote a book in less than 2 months.
  1. What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
I don’t have a writing schedule. I write when I can. I work a full-time job and have a family that I come home to, so my writing usually takes place early in the morning and late at night and while I’m on my lunch break.
  1. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I talk to myself a lot. Sometimes I try to act out scenes in the shower, trying to find the characters’ voice. My husband thinks I’m weird and crazy. Maybe I am. J
  1. How do books get published?
I went through an indie/traditional publisher. After the book is written, you submit it to the publisher. It then goes through in-house reviews. If the publisher likes it, they’ll send a notice that they would like to publish your book. If they don’t want it, you may get a rejection letter. Sometimes you don’t hear anything at all. In my case, my publisher liked what I submitted, they accepted the manuscript and then we went through several rounds of edits. The publisher does a lot on the back end such as artwork for the cover, getting the ISBN #s, formatting, marketing, and tons of other publisher stuff that is too long to put here. After several months, the package comes together, and the book is born. It’s a complete labor of love.
  1. Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?
I have an insane imagination. Some ideas just come to me. Others come to me in dreams, listening to conversations, books, pictures. The ideas are endless when you open your mind to the universe.
  1. When did you write your first book and how old were you?
My first book was a little short thing, about 10 pages and I was around 6 or 7 years old. My first real book that I wrote from start to finish and was considered a novel was the first novel in the Chronicles of Fallhollow trilogy, RAGE OF THE DRAGON KING. As to my age, I was 53 when I finished.  Shhh. Don’t tell anyone. J
  1. What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I LOVE roller coasters. If I could spend my life traveling around the world to ride coasters, I’d do it. I also like taking long walks on the beach. I love collecting sea shells. I love outdoor jazz concerts. I love bike riding, bowling, hanging with my pups. Spending time with my family. Being outside. And traveling anywhere. A change of scenery is a great way to wake up the idea machine.
  1. What does your family think of your writing?
They’re impressed. My sister-in-law is so thrilled for me and really likes the story I’ve got going. My boys love teasing me about certain parts and are also ecstatic that they know I’ve kind of written them into the books. Hubby is super supportive and talks to everyone about my books. He’s awesome.
  1. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
I can actually finish one and get it published. Now that I’ve completed three, I’m in shock. When I started this series all those years ago, I never thought I’d finish. Now that I have, the ending is bittersweet. But it’s also opened up the opportunity to start my next project which has been in my mind for a while.
  1. How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
I’ve written three and I like all of them equally the same. The new project, however, has got my heart in a spin. It may be my next favorite.
  1. Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they?
Never give up. Listen to your heart and write what you love. Don’t compare yourself to other authors. Be who you are because your voice and ideas are unique to you and others are waiting to read them. Write because you love it, not because of dreams of money or grandeur. While we’d all like those things, most of us won’t achieve J.K. Rowling status. But we can touch people’s hearts and souls and if you’ve touched even one person’s soul, you’ve accomplished so very much to be proud of.
  1. Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
I wish I heard more from my readers, but what I have heard has been really positive. The teens really seem to like my books.
  1. Do you like to create books for adults?
I started one ages ago. It’s a mystery/romance/murder. I may return to it someday under a different name.
  1. What do you think makes a good story?
Believable characters, great settings, and incredible, believable, logical plots.
  1. As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
I wanted to be a veterinarian as well as a writer. I love animals. I can’t stand to see them hurt or abused.
  1. What Would you like my readers to know?
I love writing stories and I love getting ideas for stories. More than anything, I’d love to hear from fans and readers and potential readers about what you’d like to see in a story. I’m open to any questions and I love talking to people. To all of your readers who have read my books, thank you from the bottom of my heart. For those who aren’t sure if you’d like the story, try it. If you don’t, tell me why. It’s your feedback that will make me a better writer. As always, I appreciate all of you. Stay true to yourself. Be who you are and say what you think, because those that matter don’t mind, and those that mind, don’t matter. (my favorite quote from Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss). And thank you for joining me today. Do you have a question? Want to contact me. Look me up on social media and Goodreads. I look forward to hearing from you. ’Til we meet again.
