by Jen McConnel
Publication Date:  March 8, 2016
Publisher:  Month9Books

After the disaster in Europe, Darlena’s starting to get desperate. She knows the only way to
defeat Hecate and the other crazy Red Gods is by banding together with other Witches, but is it any wonder she has a hard time trusting them?

With Izzy’s support, Darlena begins making fragile strides toward repairing the mess she made,
but she just can’t catch a break. As chaos runs rampant around her, Darlena begins to think that things would be better if she’d never become a Red Witch in the first place. But there’s no way to change the past…is there?

The final book in the Red Magic series brings Darlena face to face with impossible odds, and a
terrifying choice.

Interview:

  1. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I’ve always loved writing, but I didn’t get serious about it until I was almost done with college.
  1. How long does it take you to write a book?
That depends on the book! I can write a draft in a month (thank you, NaNoWriMo!), but I also have a really long editorial process. I’d say start to finish, with other projects rotating in, it’s usually a year or two before I’m ready for readers to see it.
  1. What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
I like to sprint, so when I’m working on a new manuscript, I devote as many twenty-minute sprints as I can manage. Usually, I can write for two to three hours in one day, and right now, most of my writing occurs on the weekends.
  1. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
Hmmm…maybe the fact that I write better under pressure, so I usually set a timer and challenge myself to hit a certain word count in a short amount of time.
  1. How do books get published?
There are so many ways for a book to make it into the hands of readers! The Red Magic series is published by Month9Books; in 2012, I queried the first manuscript in the series (which didn’t come out until 2014). There are a lot of steps in the process, including various editorial rounds, cover design, and book design.
  1. Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?
I think my ideas come from everywhere; every moment I’ve lived, every place I’ve visited, every book I’ve read, they’ve all shaped me in different ways, and those experiences meld together in my writing. It’s a bit like alchemy, or magic, watching to see what will come out on the page next!
  1. When did you write your first book and how old were you?
My first book that I completed (but that has never been published, and probably never will be) was finished when I was 22. My first book that was published (The Secret of Isobel Key) was finished when I was 25.
  1. What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I’m an avid reader, so you can always find me with my nose in a book. I also love yoga, and I just started running last year, so I’m working on that! I also teach, in addition to spending time with my family.
  1. What does your family think of your writing?
They are all super supportive! I’m incredibly lucky to have such amazing family members.
  1. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
I think the biggest surprise that I keep learning is that each book will be a little bit different, in terms of process. My writing process keeps shifting and evolving, and it’s interesting to see how much I’ve changed as a writer in the past decade.
  1. How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
Triumph is the eleventh book I’ve had published, and it’s so incredibly hard to pick a favorite; they’re all my babies! I will say, though, that I really, really love Darlena (the main character of the Red Magic series).
  1. Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they?
Just keep writing (and reading!). Nobody but you can tell your stories!
  1. Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
I love hearing from my readers. One of my favorite things someone told me was that she hoped her daughter would find a guy like Justin to date someday. <3 o:p="">
  1. Do you like to create books for adults?
I love writing across genres and age levels, but I particularly love to write for teens.
  1. What do you think makes a good story?
An interesting concept, a cool setting, and a character I can care about are things that make a story fun for me to read.
  1. As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
Lots of things! I wanted to be a writer, an archaeologist, and a professional actor, to name just a few.
  1. What Would you like my readers to know?
I hope you enjoy the Red Magic series! Thanks so much for your support!
