Chapter 2 (Excerpt #2)
Blasphemy

The sunlight beamed against my eyelids as I opened them. I felt warmth lying next to me. I had my back to his front and he had one of his arms wrapped around my waist. I inhaled his scent. Umm, he smelled so good. He was still asleep and seemed so peaceful. His golden, dirty blond hair cascaded around his perfectly sculpted face. He was the one who was beautiful. I traced my finger over his cheek and his eyes fluttered.
“Good morning, my love,” he said in a low, husky voice.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you. You look so peaceful when you sleep.”
“This is the best sleep I’ve ever had.”
“I’m glad you slept well. I did, too.”
“When do we need to be downstairs?”
I glanced at the time on the night stand. “We have time. Do you want to get ready?”
“No, not yet. I would like to stay in bed with you for as long as possible. I can really get used to this.”
     “You are so sweet.”
He rolled his eyes. “Only with you.”
I wrapped my arms around his neck and he hugged me back tightly. “It shouldn’t take us long to get dressed,” I said kissing him. “Let’s continue what we started last night.”
     “You’re a demanding little thing.”
     “Shut up and kiss me.”
“We’re ready,” I told Sharaf and Tazman, who were waiting to escort us. They walked on each side of Kadeem. I was in front of them. Everyone stared as we made our way downstairs. Some Kadanans appeared shocked, others angry, and, surprisingly, some looked amused. As long as my father backed me, they would honor his request. I glanced at Kadeem. His face was impassive. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking. I kept my head high as I strolled into the dining room.
My father, John, Shi, my brothers, and their seconds were there. I sat across from Shi and Bryan. Kadeem sat down next to me. Sharaf and Tazman stepped a few feet away. I tried not to pay attention to how everyone glared. You could feel the tension radiating in the room.
     “Hello, Father.”
“Good morning, Syira. I trust you didn’t have any problems yesterday?”
“No, we didn’t, Your Highness,” Kadeem answered.
“Very well, let’s eat,” my father stated.
     “Hi, Shi,” I said.
“Hey, Syira … Kadeem,” Shi replied.
“Bryan, this is Kadeem. You two have never been formally introduced.”
     “Hello,” Bryan spoke congenially.
“It’s nice to meet you, Bryan.”
At least Bryan was nice about it. Nile sat a couple of seats down and you could all but see the fumes coming off him. I definitely wasn’t going to introduce them. I introduced him to Nazar and the other seconds instead. The rest of breakfast went fairly well. Shi and I talked and included Kadeem in the conversation.
“You seem to be adjusting,” Shi told Kadeem.
“Things are definitely looking up now that I am with Syira.”
“You do seem to truly care for my sister,” Bryan acknowledged.
     “Very much so.”
“Good. Then I won’t have to tell you what would happen if you ever hurt my only sister,”    Bryan said with an amused expression.
Kadeem stifled a grin. “I would expect no less.”
“Do you have any plans today, Syira?” Shi asked.
“Kadeem has to stay in my room except for meals. So unless Father has business to discuss, I’ll be with him.”
“Well, Kadeem, keep doing what you are. And hopefully my people will come around,” Bryan said.
“I think once the baby comes it will help with the situation,” Shi added.
“It really doesn’t matter what anyone thinks, honestly. It’s not going to change anything,” I said, glancing down at my stomach.
“It will work out, somehow,” Shi encouraged.
“And we will support you no matter what, Syira,” Bryan said.
The saying “It’s too good to be true” sprang to mind. After breakfast, Kadeem went ahead, escorted by Tazman and Sharaf. I told him I would only be a moment while I spoke with Rose, one of our maidens. Not a minute later, I heard an altercation down the hall. Rose and I dashed around the corner. Petar, a lieutenant in John’s unit, was in Kadeem’s face, along with his comrade, whose name I couldn’t remember.
“This Polar can’t be trusted to roam free,” Petar spat.
“What is the meaning of this?” Petar’s comrade asked.
“Those are King Julius’ orders,” Sharaf countered.
“I will have a word with the king,” Petar challenged.
I waltzed right in front of Petar the a-hole. “Who are you to question my father’s orders?”
Petar’s dull brown eyes grew wide for a second, and then he regained his composure.
“Your Highness, I meant no disrespect, but he is a spy. We can’t fall into his trap.”
“Kadeem is no spy. We were raised to judge only if one has been found guilty.”
“I care about your safety, Your Highness, as well as my people. Why do you defend our enemy’s son?”
A crowd gathered, and I didn’t know how to diffuse this situation. Kadeem’s mouth formed a tight line but he said nothing.
“Kadeem’s no concern of yours, Petar. You should keep your comments to yourself.”
“You seem to know him personally. Are you vouching for him?”
     “Petar…” Sharaf warned.
I raised my hand to silence Sharaf. I appreciated him coming to my aid, but I was about to put this prick in his place. “I am.” Petar’s forehead wrinkled and he appeared to be calculating.
“Are you carrying his child?” Petar dared ask. There were several gasps and intakes of breath. “I think we have a right to know. And if that’s the case, it’s blasphemy you are carrying.”
A scarlet aura invaded my vision and I was unaware of what happened next. Petar went hurling through the air. He crashed into the hall pillar and fell, out cold.
