Hero and Villain.

Good and Evil.

Love and Hate.

Would that the world were that simple. Nothing is ever simple in a world filled with superheroes and villains. She may not wear a cape or have superpowers, but no one would say Joanna Fallon isn't a hero. At great personal cost she's saved the city of Galilee Falls from two supervillains, but has finally found a measure of peace. But whatever rises often falls, and even the city's champion may not be able to fight the cataclysm about to befall not only her city but the whole of the world...or even want to.

Read the conclusion to the critically acclaimed Galilee Falls trilogy from the imagination of the IPPY award winning author Jennifer Harlow.

Excerpt: Chapter One-Wedding Bell Blues

If your boyfriend is the premier superhero in the city with the highest concentration of the super-powered in the country, you get used to situations like this. Dinners where you find yourself sitting alone in a restaurant, cancelled vacations, missing birthdays. I’ve endured them with a smile and forgiveness, but not today. I’ve stressed to him a thousand times how important this day is to me. Just this morning, before my hair appointment, I told him three times. But no, when I got home to put on my dress, he was nowhere to be found. I had to start up the comms on Doris Jr. to track him down. Sure enough he was out in the field fighting Hexen and more of the villains d*mn zombies at a war reenactment. Still, he swore he’d be here on time. Trust me, he said. Damn superheroes. Guess it’s partially my fault for falling in love with one. Again. I should have learned the first time around. Damn you for being so amazingly brilliant, Jem Ambrose. Damn you.

Interview
Where are you from?
I’m from all over. I consider myself a military brat minus the military part. We moved around a lot when I was a kid—Dad got bored every three years—and I inherited his restless spirit. Right now I live in Atlanta but who knows for how long.
Tell us your latest news?
Fall of Heroes is the final installment in The Galilee Falls Trilogy, my superhero series. It’s got romance, intrigue, and action galore. It’s told from the perspective of a “normal” woman surrounded by superheroes and villains waging war in her city. I adore this series. It’s my labor of love. I adore superheroes and especially supervillains. I read comics all through my childhood and still do sometimes. Really, in my other series I write vampires and werewolves and the difference is so slim. Both superheroes and supernatural creatures are tortured, often have double lives, and have to acclimate to a world where they’re freaks.  If you like vampires and werewolves that make up the glut of urban fantasy, you’ll like superheroes and villains as well. I know I do.

When and why did you begin writing?
I’ve always been a storyteller, but I fought against being an author. The pay sucks and you’re rejected constantly by both publishers and readers. It’s beyond soul crushing. If I could be anything else, I would. But I can’t not write. I love it so much. It’s in my blood, my heart, my soul. I wrote books for ten years before I ever even got an agent let alone saw my book in print.  Being an author is not for the faint of heart.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
About halfway through my first book when I was nineteen. I railed against that label because I knew being a writer isn’t an easy thing to be. The storytelling part is fun, on good days at least, but everything else is a nightmare. Editing, marketing, and the constant, constant rejection. Like I said before, I just can’t stop myself.

What inspired you to write your first book?
Really? I wanted to see if I could write a book. I was nineteen, in college and working in retail, and needed to challenge myself even more. I was into thrillers and mystery novels so I cut my teeth on that genre. It hasn’t been published yet, but was quite the learning experience. I wanted to see if I could do it, and I did. Haven’t stopped since.
Do you have a specific writing style?
Fast paced, fun, and tinged with humor. I’m a wise-ass so my characters tend to have the same trait. I put my characters through the ringer where they can either cry or laugh. I make them laugh.
How did you come up with the title?
Titles usually come to me about halfway through the book. It just sort of comes to me.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
All my books tend to have an underlying message I don’t even know about until I’m editing it. My subconscious is a MENSA member compared to my conscious mind. The whole of The Galilee Falls Trilogy is about how each and every person is responsible for making the world a better place. How you don’t have to be rich/powerful/have a special gift to help other people. The only way the world gets better is to act. Compliment someone. Make someone having a bad day laugh. Donate whatever you can to charity. It’s that easy.
How much of the book is realistic?
The book takes place in a world with superheroes and villain, most with powers, but beyond that this book could take place here and now. It deals with real world problems and has realistic characters. I try to go out of my way to make sure everything and every character is true to logic and reality. It can be a pain in the butt at times to keep to that tenant but I do.
What authors have most influenced your life most?
Without question Janet Evanovitch, Laurell K. Hamilton, and Stan Lee. From Evanovitch I learned how to incorporate humor, mystery, and sexual tension while keeping a quick pace in the story. Hamilton showed the perfect was to combine two genres effectively, thriller and paranormal, and that a heroine doesn’t have to always be a sweet, perfect woman. She can have a hard edge and still be likable. From Stan Lee’s comics, especially X-Men, hidden in the action scenes and love triangles was a parable on prejudice and acceptance of self no matter how different you are from the crowd. I can only pray I do my idols justice with my own work.
What books are you reading now?
I’ve finally gotten around to reading straight sci-fi. I don’t know why I never did before, but I’m loving it. Space operas are my favorite right now. There are so many possibilities out in the vastness of space. You can really let your imagination run wild.

What are your current projects?
Right now I’m writing away at the next in my F.R.E.A.K.S. series. It’ll be out sometime next year.

What would you like my readers to know?

Thanks for taking the time to get to know me a little.
