Excerpt from UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS . . .Cale

He feared no man, no foe, no obstacle or challenge. He’d learned to stand his ground and take it without a wince while growing up with the most to prove in the House of Terriot. He’d been schooled beneath the heavy heel and meaty fists of Bram Terriot, bearing the marks of those lessons scored into his skin and once tender psyche. He understood intimidation better than he did compassion. Had once indulged in every savagery Lee now expected from him. Would have become a brutal, heartless monster walking the same path his father followed had it not been for the two things that called to his latent decency: The brothers who’d fearlessly stood beside him and the female brave enough to believe his claims.

He owed them. He owed his family prosperous lives without fear and subjugation, where pride wasn’t measured in cruelties. He owed the woman he loved the fulfillment of promises made by a starry-eyed boy. He owed them a future in which they bowed to no one and had no reason to expect the worse from one another. And to achieve those things, all he had to do was right the wrongs of the man who’d desecrated the crown he now represented.

All . . .

With a weary laugh, Cale closed his eyes.

His debt. His burden. His to carry and complete alone. No whining about the costs to body, heart or soul. No crying over what couldn’t be changed, repaid or repaired. No shirking from sacrifices sure to cost more than he’d ever thought to wager. The blood on his hands would never come clean. There was no forgiveness for his sins—the sins of the father now those of the son. He was lost but he wouldn’t drag those he loved and respected down with him. Not while he still had strength and breath and opportunity.

He couldn’t save his people hiding on their mountain top. He couldn’t purge his guilt without a willingness to surrender his life.

And he couldn’t protect his mate if he couldn’t provide her with his heir.

Interview with Nancy Gideon
Where are you from?
Southwestern Michigan, born and bred.
Tell us your latest news?
I’ve got a new release!!  UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS is now available in all formats.  It’s Book 10 in my “By Moonlight” dark shape-shifter series, but can still be read as a standalone book.  Besides doing this New Release Blitz, I’ve also unlocked the doors to my 5th Annual Haunted Open House with this year’s theme: Book Party.  I’ve got lots of guest authors, tidbits, excerpts, giveaways, freebies and fun stuff, so stop by at http://nancygideonhauntedhouse.blogspot.com/
When and why did you begin writing?
I’ve been writing since I could put pencil to ruled notepaper.  I can’t NOT write.  The stories in my head won’t let me.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
When I saw my first fractured fairytale published in my elementary school’s newspaper when I was in 5th grade.  I knew that’s what I wanted to do.
What inspired you to write your first book?
Outrage. I was always writing bits and pieces but never putting them together into a finished product.  When I bumped into an former university English professor while selling things at a craft fair, she remembered me and remarked, “So THIS is what you’re doing with your college education!”  I was so angered at her for her tone (and because she was right!), I went home that night and started page one and wrote right through to the end of my first finished manuscript.  That one didn’t sell. But the next one did. And now my 59th book just came out.  So, yes, THIS is what I’m doing with my college education!
Do you have a specific writing style?
I used to be a strict plotter, with a 20-page outline I never veered from, starting at page one and writing through to page end.  Now I consider myself a plotter with pants on fire.  Some scenes just have to be written when they spring to life in the imagination.
How did you come up with the title?
It’s always difficult picking a new word to fit into an established series title but UNLEASHED seemed obvious because it deals with escaping both restrictions and the past.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
It’s about redemption and forgiveness, and a love strong enough to embrace both those things – but not without a struggle.
How much of the book is realistic?
It’s a paranormal so . . .  Once you suspend your belief to embrace shape-shifters, the angst, emotions, action and setting are all very true to life.
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
Again, paranormal! The only experiences I’ve had are in doing the research in New Orleans and Lake Tahoe.  A dirty job . . .  Being there really helped me develop the visuals, textures, scents and sounds.
What books have most influenced your life most?
I’m a voracious reader so that’s a toughie.  Walter Farley’s Black Stallion series for hooking me on reading as a youngster.  Allister McLean for honing my mind for adventure as a young adult, “The Flame and the Flower” for turning me on to romance (literally!), and anything by Dean Koontz, my go-to guy for a great read.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
Norah Roberts.  A great lady, a dedicated and professional writer and the creator of “Butt in Chair, Hands on Keys” – my mantra.
What book are you reading now?
I’m reading SEDUCED BY CHAOS, a paranormal by debut author Luna Quinn.  It’s gritty, sexy and fun so far . . .
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
I love new authors!  I’ve got a ton of first timers on my Kindle but I have to get this promotion done first. There’s never enough time for a writer to read.
What are your current projects?
I’m jumping into a group of novellas for a “House of Terriot Foursome” featuring the very rowdy and delicious Terriot brothers in UNLEASHED BY SHADOWS.  Can’t wait!

What would you like my readers to know?
