But hysteria has taken hold in Salem Village, and the Tall Man, spawned by tales of his existence, is born to fulfill his dark purpose.

Soon Merry and William find their lives taking unthinkable paths. For when Merry leaps from the 17th century into modern-day Salem, she must accept that unlike others who were accused and hanged for being a witch, she truly is one.

About the Author:

Susan Catalano spent most of her youth in a one-traffic-light town in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. Her first act of writing consisted of scrawling a murderous confession on a crumpled piece of paper. She then told her 3rd grade friends that she'd found it in the wall of the spookiest room on the scary, vacant floor of the Victorian Hotel her family owned. Eventually, Susan ended up in Massachusetts where Salem, known as Witch City, captured her heart and imagination and inspired her first novel, The Timeless Ones.

 Interview
Where are you from? I live in Massachusetts, but I’m from New York.
Tell us your latest news? I’m an inch away from finishing the sequel to The Timeless Ones. Then it’s off to an editor and final revisions before hitting the shelves.
When and why did you begin writing? My first memory of writing is when I was about 8 years old. I lived in a Victorian Hotel that had a deserted, creepy third floor where I would lure my little brother to scare him. I got the idea to pretend I found a letter in a wall—a confession from a murderer—and share it with my classmates. They asked me to look for more letters, and I never stopped writing. I wrote in play form until highschool, then switched to novels where I found my niche. I keep writing because I must.
When did you first consider yourself a writer? I’ve always needed to write—it’s a part of who I am—so I guess I’ve always considered myself a writer.
What inspired you to write your first book? I’ve written a couple of books prior to The Timeless Ones that I now call “practice”. They’re not publish-worthy, but they taught me what not to do! As for The Timeless Ones, I was inspired by the song, Fields of Gold by Sting, and the image of a woman waiting for her lover in a golden field. After several visits to Salem, I began to wonder, what if the girl waiting in the field was a witch? And, a book was born.
Do you have a specific writing style? Hmmm, that’s a tough one. Music plays a big part in my writing process, so I feel the moments, the scenes, the moods. I hope that comes across in my writing. I also strive for realistic dialogue. If I’m unsure, I read it aloud to test the pace and hear the words to make sure the conversation sounds natural.
How did you come up with the title? It took me forty-two attempts before I settled on The Timeless Ones! In the end, I thought it perfect as timeless referred to both the travel across time and the love between Merry and William.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? If there’s a message, I think it’s to embrace whatever power lies within you, even if you can’t spin rainbows. We all have something to contribute.
How much of the book is realistic? In The Timeless Ones, there is a mix of fictional characters and real historical figures. There are facts mingled with fiction and historical events brought to life (with a bit of imagination), but the story is fantasy...
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life? Well, obviously I haven’t time traveled, but many of the Salem scenes are based on my own experiences in Salem, such as the Trial of Bridget Bishop winding their way through Essex Street.
What books have most influenced your life most? This is always hard for me. I can’t possibly name them all, so here are a few: The Stand, Misery, The Book Thief, Dracula, and the Harry Potter series.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? I was a devout reader of Stephen King, so he was an early influence. I have lived by his book, On Writing.
What book are you reading now? Insanity (Mad in Wonderland) by Cameron Jace. It’s frabjous!
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?  Hugh Howey, Veronica Rossi, Larissa Brown. Oh, and the guy mentioned above, Cameron Jace.
What are your current projects? A Necessary Darkness, sequel to The Timeless Ones. I’m also outlining a new fantasy, The Green Series, that I’m very excited about.
What would you like my readers to know? I’d love to hear from them whether about The Timeless Ones or any great reading recommendations they may have. I’m a reader too!
