Where are you from?
I grew up in North Carolina, but have lived in Virginia for most
of my life—almost 30 years!
Tell us your latest news?
I’m excited to be releasing my third Romantic Ghost Story, The House at Homecoming Cove, on October
15, 2015. I’d originally intended to write just one sweet and spooky tale, The Ghost Next Door, but the response to
that was so overwhelming I wrote a second light paranormal book, The Light at the End of the Road, and
now a third! All three books have surprise endings, and each twist is different
and unique to that individual story.
When and why did you begin writing?
I wrote a lot of poetry in high school, then contributed feature
articles to my college’s weekly paper. Afterwards, I had a job contracting with
the US State Department where I did a lot of technical writing. I didn’t
complete my first novel until I was in my early thirties. At present, I’ve
written more than twenty books.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I first decided I wanted to be
a writer in high school. It took a very long time to discover my path, and
find my right fit in romance fiction. I like it here a lot! I think I’ll stay.
What inspired you to write your first book?
My first book ever was a thriller novel, based on my contracting
experiences in El Salvador during that country’s civil war—and also on my
experiences living and studying in Spain and having family there. My first
romance novel was based on the idea of an avid romance reader finding her real-world
match. That book, Real Romance, was
inspired by a trip to an Ophthalmologist with my daughter. The eyeglasses guy
was very hunky, and I found myself thinking, Hmm, wouldn’t it be interesting if I were single and in need of his
assistance? LOL.
Do you have a specific writing style?
I think it’s mostly short and sweet, but I can tend to get wordy
at times. I like to incorporate a lot of comedy in my contemporary romances,
and mystery and intrigue in the light paranormals.
How did you come up with the title?
For The House at Homecoming
Cove, I wanted the title to reflect a sense of place, because the setting
is so integral to the story. The word “homecoming” also has several meanings to
different characters as the plot unfolds.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
That true love is destined, but that our destinies are not always in
our hands. Sometimes we have to give ourselves over to the larger fates and see
what life has in store for us. It could be something (or someone) really
wonderful!
How much of the book is realistic?
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
The setting for The House at
Homecoming Cove is based on a 50 acre farm my family and I rented a few
summers ago. It was on the Virginia Eastern Shore and in an extremely isolated
locale. The scenery was gorgeous, but I could imagine how a century- old
farmhouse like that could get spooky if I were a single woman staying there all
alone.
What books have most influenced your life most?
Wuthering Heights and The Old Man and the Sea.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
I’m not sure he’s so much a mentor as an inspiration. Earnest
Hemingway for his economy of words. I love the concept of writing succinctly and
powerfully. He was a master at it.
What would you like my readers to know?
