Give ‘Em Pumpkin To Talk About
by Joyce and Jim Lavene

These skilled writers have done it again. They’ve penned a book that had me completely transfixed. Their style of writing feels as though it was so effortless to them. (I bet they would say different). It just flows across the pages.

Well-tuned, with plenty of romance, mystery, suspense, history, legend–and some just plain ornery people. The book became a really fast read, because I couldn’t bear to stop before finishing!

 Interview

Where are you from?
Joyce: Portsmouth, VA
Jim: Mobile, AL
We were both raised in the Chicago area with Southern mothers and Northern fathers but didn’t meet until we were both in Washington, DC.

Tell us your latest news?
We have the first book in the Purple Door Detective Agency Mysteries – Be My Banshee out in September. Retired Witches Mysteries – Looking for Mr. Good Witch in October. The Canterville Bookshop Mysteries – A Dickens of a Murder in November and Fat Tuesday Fricassee – Biscuit Bowl Mysteries and Tree Ya Later – Christmas Tree Valley Mysteries in December.

When and why did you begin writing?
We started writing together because we wanted to do something we both would love when our kids started growing up. We were running an office supply business in 1995 and wanted something that was fun. We both love to read and had dabbled at writing. Our first book came out in February 1999, A Family for the Sheriff from Harlequin.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Joyce: When I was born – or very close to it.
Jim: after we’d been writing for years.
What inspired you to write your first book?
Reading. It’s what inspires all writers to get started.

Do you have a specific writing style?
Not so much narrative and lots of dialogue.

How did you come up with the title?
We didn’t. Our editor, Jeni Chappelle, came up with it because she hated the title we were using. We were going to call it Pumpkin Dandy. We like the new one better.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
That life is always different than it seems. There are surprises waiting around every corner.

What would you like my readers to know?
We love pumpkin! Pies. Cakes. Pudding. You name it. We came up with the idea for this book when we drove past an abandoned farm with a pumpkin patch sign in the driveway. Everything after that came with the characters.
