Interview

BLOOD SKY author Traci L. Slatton
Where are you from? Around. My father was in the Navy and we transferred around the country a lot when I was a kid. I was born in Great Lakes, IL and subsequently lived in Norfolk, VA; Groton, CT; Millington, TN; and Olathe, KS. I attended college in CT and now live in Manhattan. I guess I can say I’m a New Yorker now.
Tell us your latest news? The latest news is the publication of the 4th book in my dystopian After Series, BLOOD SKY. The saga of Emma and Arthur, and the apocalyptic mists and the psychic human biomind, continues….
When and why did you begin writing? I began as a little girl, writing poetry in second grade. In first grade I went from reading “See Spot Run” to reading novels in a few months, and then I was off and running, devouring books. In second grade I started writing poems and soon thereafter stories. Stories and words bubble up from within me, they’re woven into every angstrom of my being.
When did you first consider yourself a writer? Good question, and it has two answers. One is that from the moment I read my first novel, I wanted to be a writer, and from the time I finished my first poem, I knew I was one. On the other hand, I am constantly striving to become a “writer,” constantly pushing myself to deepen and improve the art and craft of my writing. Right now I’m reading a lot of Joseph Campbell as part of my evolution as a writer. So, in one sense, I’ve been a writer as long as I can remember, but also, it’s an evolutionary journey with no tangible end in sight.
What inspired you to write your first book? The burning desire in me to tell stories!
Do you have a specific writing style? I try to write with great clarity and with sensual acuity, that is, with visual and tactile depth. I began as a poet and studied poetry in college and graduate school, so the music of language is important to me, though I often don’t achieve the lyricism to which I aspire.
How did you come up with the title? BLOOD SKY has a primal, elemental feel to it, which works for my paranormal dystopian series.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? Well, there are a few ideas that matter to me. For one, I know that we have greater abilities than the concrete senses that Newtonian science acknowledges, and I try to share that with readers. Also, BLOOD SKY turns around Emma’s choices. She has to come to understand that she is making a choice at every turn. I think facing our choices is part of maturation.
How much of the book is realistic? Human emotion and human action, those parts are realistic. I have tried to create a speculative world that is plausible.
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life? Just my sense that we are, in many ways, already living in a dystopia.
What books have most influenced your life most? In terms of novels, I have been very influenced by WHOM THE GODS WOULD DESTROY by Richard Powell. I am always reading, so there are always new books influencing me.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? Richard Powell, because I read that novel a thousand times, and it taught me a lot about the structure of story.
What book are you reading now? Currently I am reading books by Dave Richo, a Jungian therapist. His books HOW TO BE AN ADULT, THE POWER OF GRACE, and HOW TO BE AN ADULT IN RELATIONSHIPS are just amazing. They are about love and maturation and what it means to be a whole human being.
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest? I am reading everything I can find about the Cathars as research for a historical novel. I’ve found this strange and wonderful British psychiatrist named Arthur Guirdham who writes about being a Cathar revenant. I’m all over his books like stink on a skunk.
What are your current projects? Having finished BLOOD SKY, I’m currently working on a novel called THE YEAR OF LOVING. It was entitled THE YEAR OF LOVING A YOUNGER MAN, but then the protagonist went and got herself involved in a love triangle with a younger man AND an older man, and her best friend has cancer, so I realized it was THE YEAR OF LOVING. I’m also researching the siege of Montsegur and the Cathars for a historical novel.

What would you like my readers to know? I hope they read with joy.
