Excerpt:
“Nathan, it’s
us,” Sasha tried to say calmly, inching closer with hands held up in seeming
surrender. Jim did the same.
Nathan knew he
had to be a pitiable sight with that weakly held knife, but he’d use it, damn
it, he would. Somehow he’d use it.
His back hit the
corner of the room.
“Playing that
game?” Nathan scoffed. “I know better.
You haven’t been them in…in so long, I…I don’t even remember. I don’t remember…”
“Nathan,” Jim
pleaded, moving closer with one hand outstretched. He looked so strange to Nathan, almost
believable with those dark blue eyes so caring, so concerned. “I can’t imagine what it must have been like,
but it’s over. You’re not in the Veil
anymore. We got you out. You’re safe.
With us.”

Interview
Where are you from?
I was born in northern Minnesota, a small town
called Thief River Falls, and currently live in the Twin Cities and work in
downtown Minneapolis.
Tell us your latest news?
As this is the release of the last book in my
trilogy, The Incubus Saga, something that has been the better part of a decade
for me, I am excited to be in the midst of working on my next book, a YA
vampire story, with Gay Paranormal Romance, of course, currently titled Life as
a Teenage Vampire.
When and why did you begin writing?
Since I could? I had notebooks with stories in them
at single digits, but it really started taking off when I discovered
Fanfiction.net in at the turn of the millennium, and I haven’t looked back
since.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Probably the first time I had a review. Writing for
yourself is wonderful, but interacting with readers, recognizing that people
will read and enjoy your work is such a thrill.
What inspired you to write your first book?
My first book was actually a novelette, The
Collector, that I wrote with my husband. We were inspired by a combination of
the now cancelled show Reaper, Supernatural, and our love for Ghost Rider (the
first movie was our first ever Valentine’s Day date) and started envisioning
our own devil’s bounty hunter.
Do you have a specific writing style?
Not always. I am dialogue heavy, as I feel it’s my
biggest strength, and I tend to write a little bit more like a screenplay than
prose, which people seem to enjoy. I’m very visual. But I tend to swap around from
book to book whether I’m being present or past tense, and POV, though I prefer
1st person and 3rd person limited for sure.
How did you come up with the title?
After much agony. I always just called it Incubus,
but when I realized it would be three books in total, I had to have an
overarching series name and individual book titles, and that was where it took
some time. Finally, I realized that the major players around the human
protagonist, an incubus, a changeling, and a sidhe, made the most sense for
each title, and I kept it The Incubus Saga, since Incubus was the first book.
Is there a message in your novel that you want
readers to grasp?
One of my favorite anonymous quotes actually. “Love
doesn’t come around often enough to worry about something as trivial as
gender.” Especially when trying to save the world.
How much of the book is realistic?
Quite a bit, for all the fantastical elements. The
relationships, the pitfalls, people’s motivations. And the places! All of the
locations in the book were researched off of real cities, even down to a Bed
and Breakfast, and especially Minneapolis in book 1 since it’s my home.
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events
in your own life?
Not even a little, though certain ways characters
love pop culture, like any comic book or other geek references are definitely from
my real life.
What books have most influenced your life most?
Good Omens. Anne Rice’s original 5 books in The
Vampire Chronicles. The Dark is Rising series. The Night Watch series.
If you had to choose, which writer would you
consider a mentor?
Anne Rice. For all the things I may have issues with
in more recent years, those first five Vampire Chronicle books shaped my
childhood.
What book are you reading now?
As Managing Editor for BigWorldNetwork.com, I am
reading about 20 books at any given time, but the third book in a high fantasy
series by Daniel Mitchell, The Warlock Invasion, owns my soul.
Are there any new authors that have grasped your
interest?
Montgomery Thompson. He is just an amazing sci-fi
writer, both for humor and drama, and does amazing audio for his own books.
He’s also just a genuinely nice guy.
What are your current projects?
The vampire book, as mentioned, but also this rather
ambitious non-fiction endeavor with about 40 some women in my life around how
we view ‘pretty’ in our society. I’m very exciting to start compiling stories
from all these women and create something truly unique and impactful for
readers.
What would you like my readers to know?
