Lowcountry Boneyard
by Susan M. Boyer

I’ve read a lot of cozies and have gotten to be fairly picky regarding them. I like there to be reasons for the main character to be investigating, I like for the main character to act like the age they actually are, I like a fully developed setting, and I like the mystery to be well put together and well-paced. I’m glad to say that Susan M. Boyer has delivered on all counts.

I enjoyed this addition to the series. It was well thought out, plotted out and stayed true to it’s southern roots.

Synopsis
Where is Kent Heyward? The twenty-three-year-old heiress from one of Charleston’s oldest families vanished a month ago. When her father hires private investigator Liz Talbot, Liz suspects the most difficult part of her job will be convincing the patriarch his daughter tired of his overbearing nature and left town. That’s what the Charleston Police Department believes.
But behind the garden walls South of Broad, family secrets pop up like weeds in the azaleas. The neighbors recollect violent arguments between Kent and her parents. Eccentric twin uncles and a gaggle of cousins covet the family fortune. And the lingering spirit of a Civil-War-era debutante may know something if Colleen, Liz’s dead best friend, can get her to talk.
Liz juggles her case, the partner she’s in love with, and the family she adores. But the closer she gets to what has become of Kent, the closer Liz dances to her own grave.

 Interview

Where are you from? Originally, I’m from Faith, North Carolina, a small town about forty-five minutes north of Charlotte. I’ve lived in South Carolina for (mumble mumble years) a long time.

Tell us your latest news? My third novel, Lowcountry Boneyard, released last Tuesday, April 21, through Henery Press. It’s the third in my Liz Talbot private investigator series.

When and why did you begin writing? I’ve always been a voracious reader—I love books. I think I’ve always wanted to write, but life got in the way for a number of years. I started writing with the goal of publication in early 2003.

When did you first consider yourself a writer? In my mind there was a distinction between being a writer and being an author. I considered myself a writer when I started writing with the goal of publication. I considered myself an author when I held a copy of my first novel in my hands.

What inspired you to write your first book? I’ve always loved mysteries. I had the character Liz Talbot brewing in my heading long before I started writing. I also love the South Carolina coast, so the setting was a foregone conclusion. The catalyst that started the whole thing moving forward was finally having the time to write.

Do you have a specific writing style? I think so. I write in first person, so I’m basically telling the story as Liz experiences it. My style is very much a product of her voice.

How did you come up with the title? Boneyard in this book has a dual meaning. It refers to a beach on Bulls Island, near Charleston, where the remnants of a maritime forest occupy the northeast part of the island. It also refers to a cemetery that figures into the story.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? There’s not a message, really. I write to entertain. There are recurring themes in my books, however. The idea that there’s much more to this world than what we can perceive with our five senses. Our relationships with others—family, friends—those closest to us. The importance of protecting the natural beauty around us. Fried chicken makes everything better.

What would you like my readers to know? I’m planning for many more Liz Talbot mysteries. My goal is to create characters and settings readers will want to come back and visit often. I’d love it if they would like to stay in touch on my website http://www.susanmboyerbooks.com/ and/or Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Susanmboyerbooks.
