SETTING OF
THE BOOK Guest Post
Indian Lake is a small town in
Northwest Indiana only ten miles from Lake Michigan. The town was founded in
the mid-1800’s but was originally a French outpost prior to the French and
Indian War in the 1780’s. It is the
county seat and in the middle of the town is the red sandstone county seat
building with a high clock tower. The town’s three main residential boulevards
are lined with three and four story high old Victorian mansions from the time
in the late 1800’s when the town’s woolen mills, industrial manufacturing and
farm equipment manufacturing were booming. These mansions were built by wealthy
Chicago millionaires who came to Indian Lake in the summers to enjoy the city’s
seven lakes. To this day, there are still free music concerts in a band shell
near Lily Lake on Wednesday night throughout the summer. There are art crawls, speed boating events,
antique car museum, a train museum, a County Fair, the largest 4th
of July Parade in Indiana, Cruise Night for the retro-cars and trucks, a
Christmas Candlelight House Tour, a Santa Clause Parade in December, Christmas
concerts and city-wide caroling among many other community activities.
The area is surrounded by farm
land, a few vineyards, blueberry farms, apple orchards, Amish farmland and yet
is only an hour away from Chicago. Beach
weddings are highly popular.
