What happens when people do things they shouldn’t things so horrible that they are left racked with guilt and longing for redemption? Jules Bailey, the Christian Witch is about to find out. Dragon Bones is the International Publishers (IP) 2014 Illumination Silver Award Winner.

A group of strangers holed up in an abandoned church closed by the Catholic Church six hundred years ago sets the stage for an old world European mystery. News of the Messiah walking through an ancient city s gate raises suspense and invites the question: What exactly is the Church of Rome hiding in Dubrovnik, Croatia?

Secrets in Rome run deep and are well-hidden, especially in less saintly places where bloody wars have stained so many lives. When a United States Senator s daughter ends up in the same church and refuses to leave, Jules Bailey, who works for the American embassy, is summoned there to unravel the secrets. Jules has the same old soul and open mind and heart that she had in Winstead’s previous novel Wiggle Rooms: A Tale of a Fallen Anchorite, and the gift from her mother s side is still with her and burning to be used again. When Jules teams with a handsome young Catholic priest, they must dodge those closest to them as the secret of the dragon bones a secret no one should be told, much less can understand is brought to life.

Full of Balkan lore, religious fervor, death, wandering souls, and guilt, Dragon Bones will keep you wondering until the very end: Will the young American witch and the priest solve the mystery of the dragon bones before the Vatican succeeds in covering up another angelic tale of Faith and Passion?

My Review:
This is a story that I would compare to The Davinci Code, but not a movie, yet. There is a lot going on in this book. There are supernatural powers, greed, secrets and of course religion. The supernatural powers were a great addition to this plot and I thought that it made Jules who she was and more likable. She knows what it is like to be different and that there are things out there that are unexplained. Greed and secrets play a big role for this book. There are characters that are greedy for power and will stop at nothing to get what they want. They do not care who they hurt or who dies. All they care about it getting their way and making sure that no one finds out how the are succeeding. The religion in this book centered around the cover up and there were characters that were involved with religion. The ending however restored faith. I also really liked the lore in this book, and would love for the author to write more stories on the subject. I am giving this book a 4/5. I was given a copy to review, however all opinions are my own.

Those with open eyes knew the inevitable would happen one day that economic implosion would put an end to our small world. But when the United States learned that the Black Crash of 2015 was planned and carried out by Washington insiders, people simply stopped wondering why, rose above the fray, and learned how to move on with some conditions. What happened in 2015 was not just an attempt to bring an end to American exceptionalism.

Fifteen years after the catastrophic economic collapse on June 22, 2015, a very different United States has taken shape. Led by a coalition of conservative Southern states credited for forging the greatest economic recovery in our nation s history, the national economy is strong again. New laws have minimized Washington s power and placed progressive troublemakers in ghetto-like reform zones. Still, most Americans remain unwilling to forgive and forget…except for those young and in love.

Much of the nation is still suffering and ready to move on. But first, two families must do so. Mary Catherine Marshall is the daughter of a powerful Red State senator living in Atlanta; Maddy Garner is the son of a Blue State refugee hidden away in dangerous and violent Cincinnati, a national reform zone known as Hell Town. With four of the last five reform zones set to be closed, leaving only Cincinnati to remain for the long-term, Mary Catherine goes there to be with Maddy, the only one shes ever loved. When she goes missing inside the zone her father created, the two families find out quickly that getting over political ugliness isn’t their biggest problem. Deep in the bowels of the nation s reform zone, where a hateful roamer has taken over, the two families must forget the past to unite and fight an even uglier and more revengeful reality.

My Review:
This is a great story about what could happen if the wrong people come into power. What would happen if the states were divided again? During the Civil War families fought against each other. What if you had to go against the love of your life? This book is also about greed and power, but of something more important. In this book the greedy characters that want power are the ones that control the nation. What worried me a little bit was that this story has not taken place yet. On June 22, 2015, I will be thinking of this book until then. I am giving this book a 4/5. I was given a copy to review, however all opinions are my own.
