Synopsis:
An eccentric Italian heiress from the Finger Lakes. An eighteen-year-old pop star from Scranton, Pennsylvania. Allison Campbell’s latest clients seem worlds apart in every respect, except one: Both women disappear on the same day. And Allison’s colleague Vaughn is the last to have seen each.
Allison’s search for a connection uncovers an intricate web of family secrets, corporate transgressions and an age-old rivalry that crosses continents. The closer Allison gets to the truth, the deadlier her quest becomes. All paths lead back to a sinister Finger Lakes estate and the suicide of a woman thirty years earlier. Allison soon realizes the lives of her clients and the safety of those closest to her aren’t the only things at stake.

Where are you from?

I grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs.  After living in the State College, Pennsylvania, Baltimore, Maryland and Scranton, Pennsylvania areas, I returned to my roots.  I now live with my husband, three sons and two dogs on a microfarm about ten miles outside of Philly.

Tell us your latest news?

The third Allison Campbell novel, DYING BRAND, will be released on May 26, 2015.  I’m also working on a new cozy series…details coming soon!  I’m super excited, but I can’t say more than that right now.

When and why did you begin writing?

I’ve been writing since I was quite young.  I wrote my first short story on a kids’ typewriter (it was blue, plastic and I adored it) when I was eight.  The story was about a ghost dog—my mother probably still has it tucked away in a drawer somewhere.  I followed that with a family newsletter in which I included all sorts of tidbits about my family members.  Needless to say, my parents were thrilled.  In college, I took advance fiction writing courses, but I didn’t get my first short story published in a literary journal until I was in my late twenties.

As for why I write, I can’t really say there’s any one reason.  I was (and still am) an avid reader.  In addition to the pure entertainment value of reading, devouring the works of my favorite authors helped to ground me during difficult times and allowed me to connect with others when I felt lonely.  Similarly, writing allows me to express myself, sort through hard or painful concepts and emotions, and connect with others on an emotional level.  Writing is both a form of therapy and a way to give back.  Plus, it’s great fun!

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

That’s a hard question.  I suppose I still don’t consider myself a writer.  Each step—seeing my short stories in print, getting an agent, signing a publishing contract, being asked to speak at a conference or festival—has made it all a little more real, but despite my husband’s insistence that I am a writer, I still think of it as something I want to be when I grow up.

What inspired you to write your first book?

A mixture of creative restlessness and life circumstances.  I was thirty, had recently finished law school and was working for a large Philadelphia law firm.  My oldest son was five.  Balancing motherhood and a stressful law career was proving to be a challenge, and I felt compelled to write about it.  The short story format didn’t feel big enough, though, so I decided to write a novel.  RUNNING FOR THE TRAIN was the result.  It was contemporary women’s fiction about (you guessed it!) balancing home and career and the definition of “success.”  The novel landed me an agent but not a publishing contract.  After that, I decided to write what I love to read—mysteries.

Do you have a specific writing style?

My work has been compared (by Examiner.com) to Jonathan Kellerman’s Alex Delaware series.  I’m a huge fan of Kellerman, so I was flattered.

How did you come up with the title?

Naming the books in the Allison Campbell series has proven to be a challenge.  They need to accurately capture the theme or plot of the book while somehow relating to image consulting.  Usually I start with the title, but that wasn’t the case with DEADLY ASSETS.  My agent, editor and I played with titles via email for a few days until we came up with one we all loved.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

The Allison Campbell series is fundamentally about people’s ability to change.  Allison is a master at helping others reinvent themselves, but her greatest reinvention was her own.  The product of a verbally abusive father and a chronically ill mother, Allison understands what it means to be an outsider.  It’s this experience coupled with her graduate education in psychology that allows her to see beneath the surface to the beauty—or evil—underneath in order to bring about change (and solve crimes!).

DEADLY ASSETS also asks how far people will go to protect the ones they love.  As for a message?  Things are not always as they seem—true in fiction and in life.

What would you like my readers to know?

How wonderful they are!  Mystery readers are special: warm, caring and very bright.
One of the greatest joys of this writing journey has been having the opportunity to meet and interact with readers.  I feel very blessed.

    1. Thanks Connie! The series was inspired by the juxtaposition of two careers: counseling at-risk youth followed by law school on the Philly Main Line (and later the practice of law). I realized in both instances that appearances could be deceptive.
