Synopsis
When the Richmond police offer an exclusive in exchange for help with a case, nothing—not even a costume party—stops crime reporter Nichelle Clarke from making Manolo tracks to the crime scene. The hunt leads her to a televangelist’s compound in the Virginia countryside where the Reverend may be more interested in fat stacks of cash than he is saving wayward souls.
With two sexy guys tangled up in Nichelle’s story—and in her heart—work and love are on a crash course for disaster. Pressure pours in from every corner, including a faceless new competitor that means the deadline is always five minutes ago. As secrets threaten and the truth becomes her lifeline, Nichelle must unmask the killer and nail down the story before she’s snared in the carefully-constructed web.

Interview

Where are you from?
I grew up in Texas, but am a happily transplanted Virginia girl. I love Richmond—though I am still a diehard Cowboys fan.

Tell us your latest news?
My new novel, DEVIL IN THE DEADLINE, is now available everywhere books are sold. I’m currently working on finishing the next book in the series.

When and why did you begin writing?
I started writing fiction in 2009. Five years out of the newsroom as a stay at home mom, I missed writing. Since I didn’t want to go back to the long hours of reporting, I made up my own newsroom and staff to write about.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Hmmm. I’ve considered myself a writer, as in knowing it’s part of who I am, since I won my first essay contest in fifth grade. But I didn’t consider myself an author until I held my first novel in my hands for the first time. That was a pretty cool moment.

What inspired you to write your first book?
A feeling that I was missing something. I think when you’re a writer, just like when you’re an artist or actor or a musician, it’s part of you. And if you stay away too long it makes you unhappy. I didn’t set out to write a book, though—I just wanted to write something. This crazy reporter in gorgeous shoes popped into my head and wouldn’t go away, so I started writing about her. I pretty much haven’t stopped for five years now.

Do you have a specific writing style?
If I do, I don’t know what it’s called. I know agents and editors talk a lot about voice, but I think that’s hard to define. I write the way the story comes into my head, and I’m so happy and flattered that people seem to like to read it.

How did you come up with the title?
This one was thanks to my wonderful husband. He’s not much for reading, but he helps me with everything else, from plotting to titles. He’s brilliant and has the sharpest wit of anyone I know (if you talked to him, you’d hear Kyle loud and clear).

I called him in a panic when my editor asked me for a title pretty early in the draft. I’m not good with titles. We knocked it back and forth for a few minutes, and he said “Devil in the Details? and I shouted (really. I did), “Devil in the DEADLINE! You’re a genius! My editor loved it as much as I did.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
A pretty surface can hide all sorts of ugly things.

What would you like my readers to know?
I love writing, and I love Nichelle and her friends, but my favorite part of being an author is the readers. To hear that people enjoyed a book—that something I made up and typed into my laptop made them laugh or taught them something—it’s an amazing feeling. Thanks for reading, y’all!
