Captain Shelby story draws you into the story very easily. It also weaves back and forth into history of one character than another as they merge together. It is dramatic, (has) action and romance as they seek to make a better future for themselves.

Captain Shelby has something for just about everyone. There is romance between people, as well as between people and the sea. There is adventure. There are thrills and chills. And there is the sea, vast and eternal, unable to be fully known or understood. But while reading may not be the most active of pursuits, our imaginations can stretch to fill the greatest voids. And we learn something new.

Synopsis
There are places even the sea cannot go…
In coastal Denmark, a young man named Nereus builds a longship and leaves at age eighteen to discover a new, enigmatic land. Faced with unimaginable obstacles, he crosses the North Atlantic, only to be captured by the Skraelings, the Inuit indigenous people who seek revenge on all settlers because of a “Great Red Man” who murdered many of their family members.
Many years later, Nereus is hired by a group of Irish settlers who are fleeing the tyranny of King Henry VIII, and he takes them across the North Atlantic to the Newfound Land. A fierce battle ensues against the sea, the Little Ice Age, and the vicious Skraelings.
When Nereus falls in love with Laura Hodges, fiancée to the group’s leader, William Brockelby, he becomes embroiled in a dangerous love triangle…until the formidable mystery surrounding Captain Nereus H. Shelby is finally revealed.
About This Author
Jesse Giles Christiansen is an American author who writes compelling literary fiction that weaves the real with the surreal. He attended Florida State University where he received his B.A. in English literature, and holds an M.A. in philosophy from Georgia State University. He is the author of Pelican Bay (book one in the Captain Shelby Series), an Amazon #1 list bestseller, outselling Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway. One of Christiansen’s literary goals is to write at least fifty novels, and he always reminds himself of something that Ray Bradbury once said: “You fail only if you stop writing.”

Interview:
Where are you from?
Miami, FL. I grew up
there playing on the beach and swimming in the sea; it is no wonder that many
of my novels have the sea as a considerable theme. J
Tell us your latest
news?
Thanks for asking!
I’m releasing my first Christmas story ever, GOTH TOWN, on November 6th!
While it seeks to satisfy readers of classic Christmas stories, it is also
quite unique and haunting. Here is the trailer for it: http://youtu.be/QVWYlXL5mEA
When and why did you
begin writing?
I can tell you the
when, but the why is another story, which I would need a long novel to answer
fully. I wrote my first song when I was twelve years old, my first poem in
grade school (won a prize), and my first short story in high school. I wrote my
first novel, JOURNEY INTO THE MYSTIC after spending an unforgettable summer in
Alaska. I was twenty-six years old. And I’ve been writing ever since. My first
passion is novels, and my second passion is songs (please check out my GOTH
TOWN theme song on Amazon or iTunes). I believe that artists are sensitive
souls who suffer a tragedy of some kind, causing them to create a world for
themselves. They subsequently live in that world, and their canvasses are their
attempts to translate the language of their world for you. I lost my father in
a tragic accident when I was only four-years old.
When did you first
consider yourself a writer?
When I published
PELICAN BAY—not just the rite of passage of it, but the wonderful effects the
novel had on readers right out of the gate. But now I realize that I was a
writer the first time I wrote anything and shared it with at least one person.
It all comes down to how we define success.
What inspired you to
write your first book?
Spending a summer in
Alaska felt like being in Mother Nature’s womb for three months; it’s something
that really stays with a person, much like an experience of war. I process big
things by writing about them. Oh yeah, I almost forget, I’m an author! LOL
Do you have a
specific writing style?
I have the blessing
and the curse of being a literary writer. But I believe that there are a lot of
readers who want not just a great plot and story, but also meaning, challenge,
and a poetry to it all. I guess that’s what the rest of my life is dedicated to:
marrying an unforgettable read with an engaging plot. Oh,
it can be done. A good example of this is THE ROAD by Cormac McCarthy.
How did you come up
with the title?
After PELICAN BAY
(Captain Shelby Trilogy Book 1), Captain Shelby became not just the biggest
character of my writing career to date, but also a semi-brand. Since the
prequel focuses on the deep history of the old fisherman, titling it CAPTAIN
SHELBY was just automatic.
Is there a message in
your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Don’t mess with the
sea. But more importantly, the sea is a metaphor for those things we take for
granted—those things we try to control in a box of judgmental ignorance and
arrogance … until they come back to bite us.
What would you like
my readers to know?
I want you to not
only escape into a great story, but also take something from this novel. Give
it a chance, and it will give you back chances tenfold. Thank you for trying
something different. I hope you’ll also give PELICAN BAY a chance, the novel
that started it all. See you in the Land Between the Lines!
Thanks for having me!
Yours in literature,
Jesse Giles
Christiansen.
